No Reason to Kill: The search for Sheila Elrod's killer

No Reason to Kill, Russell S. Smith's second nonfiction book, revolves around a murder that some say robbed San Angelo, Texas of its innocence. Twenty-year-old Sheila Elrod was shot to death during a jewelry store robbery on February 12, 1980. Police officers collected evidence and detectives pursued anything that even looked like a lead, but it was 21 years before a persistent Texas Ranger and DNA technology would place a suspect behind bars. Noted author and newspaper columnist Ross McSwain wrote the introduction.

5No Reason To Kill  Dec 06, 2008

No Reason To Kill written by Russell Smith kept me captivated from beginning to end. I didn't want to put the book down. In telling this story, Russell Smith has handed the people of San Angelo the closure we have needed for a long time. Karen A.Zentner

5Totally Intriguing....  Feb 20, 2009
By Ann Marie Clemmons
Like other people who have reviewed this book, I too am from San Angelo. I was a senior at Central High and remember the events on the day it happened. I also knew many of the people who were mentioned in the book.

There were so many unanswered questions..for such a long time. The part where Russell Smith writes about what he believed happened that day helped to answer some of those questions and, for me, added closure.

Several of my friends commented about it being "hard not to read in one sitting" and "scary and familiar" at the same time. You truly believe you're in the jewelry store or with the investigators when they are interviewing people supposedly connected to the crime.

A great read for anyone, but especially for those of us that lived through this senseless tragedy.

By Carla "Carla"
This is one book that I could not put down, very real and captivating!!! I could not even imagine that I would just keep on reading it until the very end! Russell Smith did an outstanding job writing this and a great justice to all whose soul's and heart's were tragically hurt and saddened by Shelia's murder. Thank you Russell! Great job, and I am sure many people are so very blessed and thankful for all you have done!!

This is one of the few books I have ever read that I simply could not put down. I'm so sorry I don't have another book as captivating as this one to read. Russell Smith has really done a great job of telling this story.

5Brings closure for many in San Angelo  Jun 17, 2009
By A Texan
Most anyone who lived in or near San Angelo in the 1980s remembers the murder of Sheila Elrod during a robbery at Everett Musick Jewelers. In "No Reason to Kill," Russell S. Smith has cleared up many unanswered questions and rumors that have circulated for many years. Like his other book, "The Gun That Wasn't There," this book was written after extensive research and many interviews. It is rich in history and crime investigation and gives a good overview of how police departments and other law enforcement agencies function. Russell's passion for writing and his knowledge of law enforcement have resulted in another excellent true crime account.
