5I wish he had written more!  Feb 07, 2011
By Nan Crussell
When I read your Dad's stories I think of Nova Scotia
and all those people I love so much. The memories are
so wonderful; I often think I am one lucky fellow.
-- Lawrence Demmons, Michigan

That story (Gammy) was lovely and so typical of
pioneer life in Nova Scotia. It paints a picture of life in
the era between 1847 and the early 1900s...The geography
in the stories is always "right on," but the names
give us "food for thought."
-- Effie Pelley, Nova Scotia

Oh my, the stories were so interesting. I loved the
story of Gammy and it seemed so real, like it just
happened yesterday. I wish he had written more!!
-- Jean Langille, Nova Scotia

5A beautiful trip through Nova Scotia history and folklore  Nov 10, 2008
By Nan Crussell
This is a mesmerizing read about life in Nova Scotia along the St. Mary's River area in the early 1900s. The characters, although their names have been altered, were real people and their lives are captured on these pages, if only now in memory. What strength they showed in the harsh world of that time, and they are now wonderful examples of what life is all about without modern conveniences. These tales are beautifully written.

5A great way to remember a time in danger of being forgotten  Sep 05, 2006
By LeAnn R.
The stories in this book provide fantastic insight into the difficulties and rewards of life on the rural farms of Nova Scotia a century ago. To read them is to be transported back to a time before wheelchairs were an option, and when school was only something children attended when they took a break from the harsh realities of life on a farm. It is a reminder that land was not always tamed by machines nor life simplified by automation, and that love alone got people through hard times. Lives were so intricately tied to the land that no matter how far one traveled, one could never be completely separated from it. This book takes you deep inside the memories of a man who lived this life at that time, and is absolutely captivating. I highly recommend it.
