Riding With the Gunslinger Jun 01, 2009
By Molly Moran As stated in the subtitle of his book "Odyssey of a Derelict Gunslinger" author John Camp takes the reader on an exciting ride through the underbelly of TV preachers, corrupt politicians, right wing lunatics and himself. The reader is transported into the secret and sordid world behind the headlines to witness events seldom seen by the general public. Camp's power of observation and attention to detail add color and depth to his story. Sharing his personal struggle with alcohol and his subsequent recovery are a testament to John Camp's courage even after he takes off his reporters hat.
I think that you will enjoy tagging along with Camp on his journey through the fascinating, frightening and amusing world in which he lived and surprisingly survived. I warn you though, once you begin reading "Odyssey", you might find it difficult to put down.

Investigative Reporting at its Best May 13, 2009
By Richard A. Lemen In reading four time Peabody Award winner John Camp's new book Odyssey of a Derelict Gunslinger: A Saga of Exposing TV Preachers, Corrupt Politicians, Right-Wing Lunatics...and Me I found it to be a very revealing story from behind the scenes of one of journalisms best investigative reporters and a revealing portrait of his own personal struggle with addiction. Mr. Camp's intuitive insight into human nature placed him in a unique position to understand human behaviors as well as the foibles of egocentric personalities of such luminaries' as drug dealer Barry Seal, television preacher Jimmy Swaggart and others. Camp's own personal journey through addiction and recovery intermingled in this book explain man's ability to overcome their own problems and move forward. Camp's dedicated probing into issues that would not have seen the light of day had there not been investigative reporters, as he, change and alter history and provide the check and balance to man's otherwise unchecked behaviors. His book is a delightful read and takes the reader behind the scenes of such important stories as Whitewater, the Mafia, and international drug cartels. In addition to the exciting inside stories of a highly successful and decorated investigative reporter, I was intrigued by Mr. Camp's story because as a public health professional having studied afflictions of workers throughout my career, this book is a revealing and candid story of one of the worst but preventable problems encountered by workers, addiction. According to some sources addiction in the workplace affects some 13 million workers and costs the economy upwards of $100 billion dollars per year. Reading this book shows that even the most highly productive workers are at risk of addiction everyday and that overcoming these addictions occurs through the help of effective recovery programs one day at a time.

Great read! Jun 28, 2009
By EC Stevenson Derelict Gunslinger provided a surprise as I read it...multiple levels of involvement with the author's very personal challenges as well as with the subjects of his investigations. I was prepared for this book to be interesting; I was not prepared for it to be so engrossing that I had a hard time putting it down. The duality of who John Camp is and has been is even more intriguing than the laundry list of notables he's investigated and with whom he has associated. For an author to portray his own alcoholic slide to the gutter with such brutal honesty is impressive; more impressive is the short, direct and incredibly moving passage about the moment that changed his life forever. Derelict Gunslinger is, to me, a book about second chances, forgiveness, and the ability of human beings to change their own destinies. I loved every word.

Very nice first book from a real investigative reporter. John Camp is honest about his life and was in the lead role forome awesome investigative reporting. Possibly uses the term "Muckraker" too much, but a good read none the less. This would make a pretty good movie I think!
