Excellent book on little explored history, historical novel "ripped from headlines" Dec 23, 2008
By History Lover This new book is far and away the best thing ever written on Buchanan and Thaddeus Stevens and their intriguing relationship. Without giving it away, a book full of poisonings and suicides and secrets, as well as sexuality, is not what I expected but it is all--or almost all-- historically true. This really is literary fiction and history leading naturally to a historical novel, not just some contemporary themes thrown back in time. Lincoln and his presidency and the Civil War are given a background that is fresh and intriguing. No one who cares about Lincoln or the war should miss this book, and I am certain you will be surprised and intrigued about Old Buck's other characters and themes.

A politician with a dirty little secret? Who knew? Dec 28, 2008
By Bruce Budner James Buchanan has long been regarded--until a certain president recently displaced him--as the worst president in American history. Who would have thought he would make the subject of a riveting novel? Yet Roger Evans has pulled off the amazing feat of melding a fascinating history, a most unlikely protagonist and beautiful writing into a page-turning book that leaves the reader with an understanding of a little-known and important period of American history. Bravo.

What? You don't say? Old Buck did that? Feb 23, 2009
By BooksForever I wasn't aware of all the drama and intrigue surrounding Buchanan until I read Old Buck! This is a great piece of historical fiction; the author really captures the spirit and social conditions of the people and events of the day. I couldn't quit reading it because I wanted to find out what was in the letter Ann gave to Thad. This book has it all: family issues, sex, abuse, war, social injustice, intrigue, drama. A great read.

A Timely Work Feb 14, 2009
By Skyflash Particularly of interest with the Lincoln Bicentennial, Roger Evans presents an engaging story to help us understand the social and political climate under James Buchanan during the years immediately prior to Lincoln's election as President.
