2Its a start...  Aug 26, 2008
The stately houses of Huntington beg to have their stories told. I was excited to find this book. However, the photographic reproductions are often poor quality; at least one page just ended in mid-sentence; some spacing is non-existent between words; there are few credits for the sources of the photos; and punctuation is lost as well. There is a great deal of promise in the premise of the book, but, sadly, it lacks in delivery.

1Don't reward illiteracy.  Feb 03, 2008
I sent this book back to Amazon the same day I received it. I am angry, embarrassed and sad about the illiteracy of the writer, and I cannot in good conscience support his work.
As a native of Huntington, WV, I was excited to show my neighbors in Tacoma, WA, pictures of the grand, historic homes in my hometown. When I opened the book, however, I was too ashamed to show it to anyone: errors in grammatical usage, spelling, punctuation, style and word choice in the prose accompanying the pictures mar what could have been an interesting local history. Some of the sections that were readable had been lifted from other works without updating information and without giving credit to sources. West Virginia simply doesn't deserve to have the "dumb hillbilly" stereotype reinforced. Illiteracy should not be rewarded. There is an abundance of good local histories of this region. On the Threshold of Splendor is not one of them.
