One Bone Rattle

This is a story of a couple who is in New Orleans for Mardi Gras, but encounter more than just a carnival of gaiety. The looming mysteries of family skeletons, along with the mystical events that occur, keep David and Janet Madison seeking answers to what is happening to them. The family history unfolds before them in a way that is incredible to believe that it is real. Their quest to unlock yesterday’s histories and tomorrow’s mysteries parallel the present adventures that they continue to stumble upon after meeting “Ce”, a psychic character, who uses “Magic” to balance the chaos of past and present. David and Janet are forced to seek the truth about David’s dead father and find it difficult to piece together because there were many parts unknown to David. One Bone Rattle contains paranormal moments that are entwined with the current events and collide with the past through the discovery of the childhood of David’s father. This book is one of three adventures for the Madison’s.

4A surprising little gem of mystery  May 26, 2010
By Pamela R. Howell "prhluv9"
In this self-published first novel, Dave Putnam has shown himself to be a gripping storyteller. Readers will find themselves engrossed, turning the pages to see where the twists and turns down the streets and shadows of New Orleans continue to lead them. Putnam cleverly weaves the present with an ever revealing exposure of a past that enterrwines "actual time" with an alluring sense of the underside of New Orleans and its rich heritage of multi-religious cultures.

I cannot wait for the second in the series!

(Okay, and the cover creeped me out but hints at the macabre tone of this wonderfully told story.)

I feel David Putnam did an astounding job twisting and turning the lives crazy of sketchy characters and the "norm" of a couple city slickers. With New Orleans as the setting for the meat of the book, white voodoo has a major spin in the turns of events that the main characters take! Reflecting on the life of the main characters father with the help of an odd character you are taken back in time to the deep south in a very intrueging way.

4Good Read  Apr 18, 2011

I am not much of a reader so starting this book was not easy, but as I read it I found myself wanting more. I liked how I was kept in suspense about what was going to happen next aas he was watching the videos about his father. I enjoyed the details about his surroundings, the Author really made you feel like you were there. Everyone should read this book, I really think we will see other future books from this Author.

4Enjoyed and had a hard time putting it down!  Apr 18, 2011

I rarely have time to read books for fun with being a single mother of two, but I kept figuring out a way to get back to reading with this book. Mr. Putnam has a way of pulling you into his writings and makes it hard to put them down. There was mystery, voodoo, and New Orleans culture which keeps you wondering the whole time you are reading. There was a great amount of detail in the way things were described which made you feel as though you were there in New Orleans yourself. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Putnam in person and learned that this was the first of series that he is working on and I am looking forward to reading those. This is definitely a book I would recommend to others I think a wide range of readers will enjoy it!

2Inconsistent Character  Apr 18, 2011
By A Muncy
I typically enjoy assigned reading from my college classes, therefore I was looking forward to reading One Bone Rattle. In this case I was sorely disappointed by the reading: the problem I had was with the author's intentional or accidental style, was that the main character was somewhat unbelievable. The majority of the time that main character was portrayed as a "muscle-shirt wearing, knife wielding, tough guy" and yet describes finishing carpentry as "The ornate cornice board around the ceiling and the egg and dart molding used for chair railing accented the opulence of this abode." (Putnam pg 2)and girlie drinks such as "Pink Panty Pull Downs" (Putnam pg 3). Having met the author, I understand that he often incorporates his past work experience (in this case carpentry and bartender) into his writing. I would suggest that the author could benefit from determining which work experiences are relevant to his story.
