Origin Scroll (Targa Trilogy, Book 1)

The world is in peril. The Evil sorcerer, Sarac, seeks an ancient document entitled, the Origin Scroll. This ancient tome contains the knowledge to control the very existence of the Universes. Sarac will stop at nothing to obtain the Origin Scroll, and the fate of the Universes rest with three unknown children. Alexander Tork, a fifteen-year-old boy, is an apprentice lumberman learning the trade from his father in a small nameless village in the frontier region of Targa. Oscar Dalek, a fifteen-year-old boy, lives with his widowed mother in a town on the Targa-Cordonia border. The family's survival rests with the boy's abilities to salvage whatever he can from the caravans crossing the border. Jenneva Roth, a fifteen-year-old girl who loves to read, lives with her aged uncle in western Targa. Unfortunately, her uncle's health is failing and she must travel across the country to live with relatives she has never seen. Book 1 of Targa Trilogy.

1Keep this on the Free list  Jan 21, 2011
By L. Kellogg
Are the first three reviewers friends of the author? I'm glad this was free for my Kindle because I didn't try to finish it and didn't keep it long. Stiff, unfleshed out characters (and clueless--why hadn't the main kid character never once heard of the mean fox-things, when his friends had? Had no one in his small village ever talked to this kid before?), stiffer, wooden dialogue. Definite overuse of all thesaurus words possible for one simple action, and used without regard for context. 2D characters quip when they're not saying anything funny and saunter when the situation implies that they're meant to be hurrying. The robotic dialogue was funnier when I turned the Speech thing on. Contractions were rare enough to be startling, so either use them or do not! Typos and homonym misspellings put me off too. Custom's hut and custom's inspectors, really? Maybe the author had to be his own editor because no professional could get through it. What a painful ugh of a read.

Edited to add: this was for the Kindle, not the paperback, if the Speech thing wasn't enough of a clue. Though it would be kind of cool if paperbacks had a Speech thing. But I guess that's part of the charm of the Kindle! :-)

5Start with this book  May 06, 2008
By D. Hill "online shopper"
I've read many of Tuttle's fantasy novels and this is my fave so far. If you are trying to figure which one to purchase first, get this one. It will awaken you to a whole new world ... Tuttle's world ... He will keep you on the edge of your seat while he intrigues you with mystery and a fantasy like you've never dreamed before!
Once read, you will never forget this book.

5Another Fun Fantasy Quest  Mar 24, 2011
By Marie Rice "Part Of The Whole"
Origin Scroll by Richard S Tuttle was another fun fantasy quest story and the beginning of the Targa Trilogy. I managed to snag this one during the short time that it was free on Amazon, and just couldn't stop myself from buying the next two after reading it. Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Mages, Unicorns, Trolls, and other fantasy creatures abound. This engrossing trilogy is actually the first part of the larger Alcea Collection. The 7-part Swords Of Heaven series and the 7-part Demonstone Chronicles round out the full collection.

1a freeby that is not worth the money I paid for it  Jan 21, 2011
By Marc
I don't like this book. Its crap. I do not recommend anyone bother reading it. For a free book, it was a waste of money downloading it. The story follows the lives of a few main characters through a series of misadventures, in a typical but abbreviated Tolkien fantasy story line complete with goblins and underground mazes. The story line is far too broken and disjointed to allow for easy reading, and none of the characters is at all believable. They all lack that human element that makes a good writer great. The highlights of each of the main character's journeys occurs with miraculous ill considered brevity. The origin scroll, from which the title is taken, is the subject of perhaps 6 paraghraphs in the entire book and almost used as an oversight. It is as though the auther thinks, "oh i named it after the origin scroll so I better insert it in the text occassionally. The whole story has potential to be a good story, if it were developed and written well, but unfortunately it was not. The result is trite, overly brief and far too contrived to make for good reading. For some reason, whether it be ennui or sheer stupidity, or some irrational thought that the story may eventually become interesting, I persisted reading until the end to discover this is the first of 3 books. Rest assured I will not be reading anything else from this author.
