Not surprisingly, with a little encouragement Otto finds he’s a natural swimmer, and quickly puts his newfound skills to great use. Children everywhere will recognize facets of themselves in Otto, whether the pain from verbal cruelty, to the pangs of loneliness, to the comfort of good friends, to the joy of discovery of hidden talent. Following Otto’s journey will tug at your heart and leave you cheering for his success!

5Otto the Otter--small in size, big of heart  Apr 12, 2011
By Alechemist
This is a great book. Sure it has a nice message about overcoming fears and having a positive attitude, but the power of the book comes from the storytelling and the pictures--as all good children's books should. The story is perfectly written for the target range. It's not pedantic or pandering, just compelling. You start rooting for Otto on the second page and don't stop until he's splashing around. The illustrations are adorable. This is a favorite of my kids and we read it again and again.

5Fun pictures w/ lots of detail!  May 09, 2009

I purchased this children's book and the book has a great message. What I especially liked are the colorful pictures with so much detail, it was so fun looking at the pictures. I will be looking for more books illustrated by Erik Reichenbach. I love his work!

I bought this book at the suggestion of a friend, and could not be happier with it. Beautifully illustrated and a wonderful lesson within a book that holds my child's attention.

5A story with heart and character.  Apr 15, 2009
By S. Wirsig "a mom with a background in education"
I read this story to my 4 year old son. He loved it, and I loved the messages behind the story:

- work hard to overcome your fears
- don't let the laughter of others dampen your spirit to try
- good friends help each other
- your greatest fear could become your best accomplishment

The messages aren't hidden, they are clearly presented so the child *gets it* not just the adult reading the book. We loved the story!
