Out of the Box: Sharing the gift you are with the world!

Out of the Box uses a spiritually-creative interpretation of the Wizard of Oz as the backdrop for discovering our ability to make a difference using the skills, talents and abilities we already possess. In addition to blazing the trail using his own experience as a guide, Pruitt offers Discovery Moments at the end of each chapter to help us connect the concepts he presents to our own spiritual course. While the book has an openly Christian theme, it is not necessary for the reader to ascribe to a particular religion or even profess a spiritual connection. Rather, Pruitt includes Biblical references as a guiding principle for actions the reader may seek to take. It was only after a friend pointed out that Pruitt's charge for us to 'share the gift we are with the world' echoed Bible verse 1Peter 4:10 that Pruitt realized the connection. It be came clear to him that if we are to find our way out of our own dismal Kansas and explore a new, exciting life it would only be possible with God's help.

5Outstanding!  Aug 12, 2009
Before you read this review, you should probably know that I'm not some old person that will just tell you this book is good and you should read it. I'm in high school, a normal girl, who was given Out of the Box to read one night. I had no idea that I would be up until three in the morning....turning page after page because of how incredible it really was. It is truly a moving book, there's no doubt about that. I love to read...and I will read pretty much anything, and out of all the books I've read this book lies among my top five. Out of the Box retells the story of the Wizard of Oz, linking each character and event to some significant figure in our lives. It helped me to realize that I can change the world and I have the power to make a difference. It made me think about my life and faith, and how it all can be compared to a box. All my characteristics and fears lie within the box...but there's more to life than just the box. There is a world out there...and I have so much to offer to it. Each person is a unique gift from God. Each person has the potential to create change and lead others in the right direction. Pruitt uses faith to show that we are all here for a reason and that we have a purpose in life. You may have just come across this book and think this is not for me. But, you are reading the reviews because you think it might be a good read. Well...it is. Trust me...a high school girl that, after reading this book, realizes that there's more to life than just to live. It's worth every penny, seeing as a large amount of the profit goes towards building a church in Africa. I hope you consider reading this because it may change your perspective of life!

5Journey  Nov 26, 2007
At first, I was not prepared to take the journey. However, as I read, I found myself lost in realizations about myself once undiscovered. Out of the Box, is a unique book that goes beyond self-help and towards self-discovery. Once I opened it, it opened me. Most books similar in nature hold a mirror to your situation, this instead serves as a microscope. The image will only go as deep below the surface as you allow it. Activities in the book guide you in doing so, if you dare. Again, this is not another self help book. It is not a mere tool for encouragement. It is a guide towards a spiritual journey, which surpassed my expectations. After reading the book, I attended a conference by the author and found myself even more engaged with a new sense of self. This book can be used as a team building component because the team is only as good as its individual teammates. I recommend this book for anyone seeking to better themselves and appreciate the unique gifts that we all have to offer this world. I would also recommend it for ministry groups as well.

5Truly amazing!  Nov 20, 2007
This book has the amazing potential of allowing you the opportunity to look within yourself to find the unique talents, gifts and blessings you have been given. Furthermore, it is a guide on how best to use those tools and resources to serve oneself, and more importantly, to serve those around you. Each of us, no matter where we are in our lives, is on a journey. This book helps to clarify where you are going, how you are going to get there, and why you are going.

Without reading this book at least once, you run the risk of not realizing the type of life you could be living. As Socrates stated, "the unexamined life is not worth living."

5so good  Nov 20, 2007
I have had the privilege to hear the author of this book, Robert Pruitt, speak several times. He is an inspiring and insightful speaker and because I have been enthused and entertained by him in the past, I had very high expectations for his book. Well after I read through it cover to cover, it was better then I had imagined. It lays out an interpretable path for a more fulfilling and purposeful life. I have read it several times over, and I would recommend everyone picks up a copy as soon as possible. I can surely say will affect everyone who reads it in a significant way.

It's also important to note that it is an easy read. You get to know the author as you travel down the yellow brick road together and have some fun while you're at it. Furthermore, what's most amazing about the book and its author is that a good amount of the profits form the book go toward helping build a church in Africa, and a program in inner city New York to help give underprivileged youth a chance to go to law school.

5awesome book  Nov 20, 2007
This book was everything I expected it to be. It helped be clarify my personal vision for my life, and helped me to be committed to helping others to do the same. This book offers a little something for everyone, and the best part about it is each person gets something new out of it each time they read it. Its the same book but additionally personalized for each individual reader. Dont hesitiate, this book could change your life!
