Artful, Understated, Cerebral, and Very, Very Funny Jul 27, 2008
By S. Jacobson Eugene Madsen is a scientist and professor who seems to have spent too much time at at boring committee meetings. He uses broad erudition, a sly comedic touch, and well-honed drawing skills to create a cartoon landscape in which disembodied voices comment on abstruse mysteries of life- "existence is a constantly advancing wave front: awareness passing through time" without overlooking the quotidian "Tell some jokes and pass the crackers."
In addition to being very clever, Dr. Madsen is an excellent artist, the title page's drawing of a landscape placed between the the artist's thumb and forefinger brings to mind Vermeer's "View of Delft."
