Parker Takes a Bullet

A young woman searches for her father’s killer. My dad a drug dealer? At a time when she should have been thinking about what frothy dress to wear to the senior prom, Evelyn Parker, still reeling from her mother’s suicide, has to face this troubling question. Worse, the fact that her father’s incinerated body is found shortly after a huge cash deposit was made in his bank account leaves his colleagues in the Sheriff’s Department convinced he was on the take. But, growing up the daughter of a detective, Evelyn learned a few things about police work. When the investigation into her father’s murder grinds to a halt, Evelyn decides to do some sleuthing of her own, determined to exonerate her dad. In the process she plays loose with the law, tails a too-charming suspect, uncovers a worldwide web of international crime, and learns that things are not always how they appear. NOTE: A hardcover version of the book (Library Binding with Dust Jacket Cover) is available from Booksurge Publishing.

5Great start for a new writer and a brave female investigator  Jun 09, 2009
By Michael Wescott Loder "Wes Loder"
Here is a different twist on what could have been a typical police procedural. In 18-year-old Evelyn Parker, Hall has drawn an appealing heroine. For Parker, loyalty to her dead father and the other victims of a Russian mob computer bank theft is more important than the law or danger to herself. Although young, she knows far more than she should about investigations, police methods, fast driving and the marital arts. The result is an escalating race through the world of the LA police and dangerous criminals as Parker fights to find her father's murderers before they escape justice and take the money.
Parker is a complex and complete character. She makes mistakes, acts impulsively and struggles to calm and pace herself. But when she wins, it is because she is willing to stand up and fight for the right thing. Other characters are well-drawn and the author's knowledge of the police world and geography of Los Angeles is one of the story's particular strengths.
Long sentences and extraneous details sometimes slow the flow, but the pace and structure improve as the story progresses. I put off going to bed to finish this one. This is a great start for a writing career and I would hope to see Parker in more adventures in the future.

5Wow, ok! So... When is the Movie Coming Out? :P  Sep 16, 2009
By Diana Huang "Always on the look out for awesome."
I picked up this book and started reading it Sunday late afternoon. I just finished reading it last night on Tuesday. This is a really really enjoyable book.

It is smart and well thought out. The pacing is just right. It is filled with descriptive imagery without a blizzard of words that act like speed bumps. A couple times I raced through certain exciting paragraphs so fast I had to slow myself down and double back to digest certain details. This book kind of felt like an episode of Alias at times, but Evelyn feels more real. In this book I can hear her thought process and at times I can hear myself in her. She is the good girl who is smart, tough, independent and having one incredible adventure. I could only hope I could be as tough as her in her action packed situations. On top of that you will learn a lot of different things both serious(criminal activity, police procedures, self defense tips) and fun, like how to do a 180 direction change while going at full speed in a car(do not try this at home, seriously :P ).

It is a wonderful book. I recommend this to everyone, especially girls.

Lewis,

Great book! While I read this book everything came together in my mind as a storyboard. :P I can imagine it as a movie XD. Love how each chapter is short and keeps you wanting to read the next chapter. It's definitely a fun and easy read.
Keep up the great work!
