My favorite childhood book Sep 02, 2011
By NONNA 4 10 My mother still has her hardbound book (c.1950 I think) of Patsy and the Pup that she grew up with and in turn read it to both my sister & me as we were growing up. It is kept in her cedar chest now and only brought out on special occasions. When we were small she would read each character in the book with a different tone/voice and to this day I can hear my mom reading as Patsy saying, "Then may I KEEP him?", and exaggerating every word ever so sweetly. It was my favorite childhood book and I absolutely love the illustrations!!! I have been looking for it for years and could never find it when I did internet searches. Thank you to whom ever has control of her estate and decided to print this book again!
Biased Review from the Author's Son Dec 11, 2009
By John Tepper Marlin Full disclosure: This review is by one of HvS's sons. "Patsy and the Pup" is a fictionalized story of the author's daughter Elisabeth and her dog Trusty, who actually arrived as a birthday present in a pail in about 1950, when we were living in Montreal. Mom loved drawing Trusty and Lis and figured out a way to work up the illustrations into a sweet story. As Alfred Hitchcock might have said (and he was working in Canada on a possible children's movie at that time), the pup is the "McGuffin" in the story. Patsy finds him and wants to keep him. Can she? Will she? This book is for pre-teen children who like animals. The language is simple, the pictures full of interesting details.
