Light Fun Read ....You won't be disappointed.... Jul 16, 2007

After reading this book the only thing I could think about was that it read like a television show on the USA network with the odd couple type characters, except this book had women. I just loved the comedic and adventurous women that were written. Ms. Brock penned a novel that was not only well written, but kept me entertained as well.
Odessa Wilkes life has seemed to have taken a nose dive suddenly. In just the space of a few months she's lost her well to do job, got dumped by her boyfriend, and to make matters worse the subway ride home was cut short by a fire on the tracks. Can her life get any worse than what it was.
She's going through a sort of life crisis and isn't to sure on how to proceed anymore. Odessa floats these days between baking pies at her family's restaurant, listening to her critical sister, and praying that she doesn't have another anxiety attack. That is until her best friend Maggie Swift decides to barge into the Blue Moon, with Rocket her ADD ten year old, in tow.
Odessa clearly knows that her life will not get any better when she sees her friends face. Maggie's husband, Roger, is missing and after some minor snooping, she thinks he's having an affair. Odessa doesn't believe it and when Maggie decides to find out what is going on with her husband, she asks Odessa to be her sidekick. The sweet innocent, housewife in the form of her best friend, has turned into an wanna be PI and Odessa can't let her do it alone.
The women begin their sleuthing, but hadn't bargained for the ex-con, manipulative teenager, comatose client, a quick stint as a server, a lying security officer, and the adventure they all play in finding Roger. Odessa hadn't bargained for her ex to come back in her life looking for forgiveness, Lee the Lawyer who seems to calm her, and her life crisis to be over when all is said and done.
Fun, light, witty, hilarious, and at the same time you watch Odessa find her way back among the living. She takes charge and realizes that it's not the end of the world and the inner strength has always been there waiting for her to tap into it.

By dee dee This book is a great summer read. There were times that I even laughed out loud (which I rarely do when reading). Odessa is a hoot! The characters in this book become part of your life. It is a fun book to read for relaxation ie: while traveling on the bus or train, or at the beach or park, or in bed. You will not be disappointed!

Best Dessert in Town Jul 15, 2007
By Peaches This book is captivating from the moment you read the first page . The main character, Odessa, is unforgettable and indentifiable. The dynamic duo of Odessa and Maggie are a real riot and show you what a true frienship is all about. The story is witty, charming, and inspirational. I just couldn't put it down.

Lucy and Ethel reincarnated as amatuer sleuths Aug 07, 2011

Odessa Wilkes is having a very hard time. She was fired from her job in a top ad agency, her boyfriend dumped her on a busy Manhattan street and she was trapped for hours on a subway during a fire. No wonder she has developed an anxiety disorder.
Now more than ever she unknowingly relies on the mundane normalcy of her best friend Maggie's life to keep her grounded. But that comes to a swift end when Maggie hysterically bursts into the restaurant where Odessa now works (Odessa's sister has hired her to make desserts) and announces that her husband Roger has disappeared and she thinks he's having an affair.
What follows is two friends who bumblingly decide to "investigate" Roger's disappearance. Armed with 'Private Investigating for Dummies' and a few clues the two friends (disparagingly dubbed as Lucy and Ethel by Odessa) set out to find the missing insurance agent. Along the way they run into a crazed ex-con,shady coin collectors, a duplicitous femme fatale, multiple identity frauds, a transsexual with a heart of gold, and a new love connection for Odessa.
This book was pure fun. Light, witty and very, very well written. It read like a cross between (yes) an I Love Lucy caper,an episode of the tv show Psych and an early Stephanie Plum.
Odessa and Maggie are a great team and the mystery aspect was sufficiently complex without being too unbelievably twisty. The supporting characters were also good from George, the Chef with the colorful past, to Rocket, Maggie's high spirited son.
And the two subplots of a 1) divorcing couple whose acrimonious divorce Odessa and Maggie unwittingly find themselves involved and 2)the romance with sexy lawyer who has his eye on Odessa are added entertainment.
Highly recommended!
