Per Usual, James Roy: Based on a True Story

As the youngest of eight children, born in the Appalachian Mountains during the great depression, the challenges that faced James Roy Moody were almost overwhelming. Often his mother, Corey, struggled to keep the family together and provide encouragement and hope in the most dismal times. James Roy not only overcame the challenges he faced, but was determined to make a difference. James Roy's love of mountain culture remained a constant troughout his life, and was shared with the many close friends he developed and maintained from around the world. His gift of teaching and learning extended beyond the classroom to make a difference in the thousands of lives he touched. Whether celebrating with dignitaries at the New York National Arts Club, enjoying the Atlanta Ballet, or traveling with both new and old friends, James Roy never lost his roots, and was determined to blend his passion for the arts with his mountain culture.

4Great read!  Aug 17, 2011
By Aislinn L. Schmersahl
I may be a little biased as James Roy was my great uncle, however I thoroughly enjoyed reading about some of my family history and the culture, heritage and growth of Maggie Valley. It was very interesting to see what a huge impact that he had on the beginnings of Haywood Tech and cultural events that take place every year in Maggie Valley such as Folkmoot and the arts festivals. James Roy was truly a vibrant soul and a bit of a character, and it was great to see that captured in this story based on his life.

David did a fine job explaining the culture of the Smookey Mt. area of North Carolina. Congratulations for a job well done. Harold Underwood!

5An Inspirational Educator  Jan 05, 2009
By Paula S. Williams
Per Usual, James Roy is a moving account of a very dedicated and inspirational teacher. The book gives vivid details of life in the NC mountains and how James Roy managed to make the most of every challenge that he was presented. Being a teacher, I was most inspired at how James Roy used his skills as an educator to motivate the community and people in his life (including the author).
The book itself is easy to read and doesn't have to be read in one sitting, because each chapter explores a different aspect or accomplishment in James Roy's life. An excellent read!
