Great book for everyone in the artistic field Nov 05, 2009 My name is Drew Hall and i am a professional musician. I am not a photographer - Dale's book was a great read for me regardless. His experiences and insight apply directly to my field of music.
There is a great quote from this book that i feel applies to anyone in an artistic field of work. He says "as artists we try to convince those with no talent and money that we have talent and they should give us their money".
The chapter on "The Power Of Positive Reinforcement" made me think quite a bit about my line of work.
This book is an enjoyable and informative read- you will find yourself saying "oh yeah i can relate to that - thats happened to me" quite a lot.
He tells it like it is Sep 20, 2009 It's obvious, by looking at Dale's work, that he has a tremendous amount of talent. And he chooses to express his talent through photography. Dale doesn't have a day job to support his habit. He lives the artistic life. And he makes it pay. In this book, Dale chronicles his journey from photo school, through assisting, to working with clients, getting paid, doing the work that excites him, doing fine art prints for galleries, traveling to get the
shots and all the adventures along the way. He presents the information in a thought provoking way and with a lot of humor. I guarantee you will laugh out loud. He also discusses nuts-and-bolts issues of working with clients, galleries, stock agencies as well as how to handle rejection and what it means to be an original in the computer age.
This book is a must read for anyone contemplating a career in photography or any other of the arts.
A Necessary Read Sep 20, 2009 If you have a love for photography and are contemplating the pros and cons of becoming a full-time professional photographer, READ THIS BOOK FIRST.
There is no sugar coating here. There is no BS here. This is not a how-to book in the typical technical sense. It IS a how-to book that prepares you for the emotional and psychological roller-coaster that a photographer (or any artist) will be put through. The wide range of topics guarantees that no matter what area of photography you are interested in, you will find relevance in its' entirety.
Like Mr. O'Dell, I have been working as a professional photographer for decades and appreciate greatly his "feet on the ground" approach to a profession that can both break your heart and fulfill your greatest creative dreams.
Whether you are new to photography or an old pro, this is a most enjoyable and enlightening read from someone who has "Been there, Shot that".
Do yourself a favor and pick this one up, you won't regret it.

The In's and Out's of the business of photography Sep 01, 2009 This is a comprehensive and thorough look at the creative, technical and business sides of photography.
The author is a serious photographer who conquered commercial, fashion and location photography,
and is now working in the world of digital art photography.
To the public this is a little known area of art photography brought about by Photoshop, the digital camera and the computer.
To all artists business information is critical because art schools don't teach business practices.
Dale O'Dell covers this area in an easy-to-read style. The message is don't lose your creative idealism but
beware of the contracts you sign and the clients you deal with.
As a graphic designer and art director I come from the opposite perspective-- I buy photography.
Enjoy this GOOD READ!.

A MUST READ FOR ASPIRING PHOTOGRAPHERS Aug 26, 2009 This book is a MUST READ for all persons considering a career in Photography. Dale tells it like it is without the glamor and glitz. A series of essays or short stories, each one covering a different topic, makes for fun and informative reading. Very honest and thought out information. Dale is a very competent and skilled photographic craftsman but has chosen to talk about something besides f-stops and shutter speeds. Interestingly, there are NO PHOTOGRAPHS in this book.
Very highly recommended!
