This is Bill Pratt's first foray into writing and is refreshing because it is simple and straightforward. It is part autobiography and part business philosophy.

You can approach this book in two ways: either as an amusing read on the author's varied experiences while growing up or as an attempt to de-mystify and introduce the reader to the world of management. Bill's hands-on experience in management is limited but he has thought about basic principles and made them refreshingly clear.

In the text that discusses basic business principles, he correctly emphasizes planning but does not go into depth on how a meaningful plan comes together; or how its success is measured. Setting objectives and the action programs that form the objective could have been gone into more deeply, because it is often a poorly executed process.

He dwells on the inter-personal facets of management in a meaningful way and rightly stresses the values of good business relationships. For the newcomer to business this part of the book is particularly useful. Bill's personality comes through loud and clear in this area -- he knows how to work with and motivate people.

If the goal of the book is to amuse, it does well. It also gives good advice to the novice manager and will help them to stay on the right track. However, in terms of a comprehensive introduction to management, it needs a little more meat.
