Abuse in the Church
Amos Lassen
Of late we have become more and more aware of the abuse that goes on in various churches and it seems to be getting more rampant among Bible worshipping Christians. Most of the time the abuse is well hidden and rarely spoken about--it is like a dirty secret. However this is a secret that must be exposed. Those who are guilty of it not only abuse their victims but they also abuse their church
Michael Wittman and his family were members of a fundamentalist Christian church and as they lived they began to realize that the institution that they were supporting was abusive. It was a controlling church so one either listened or left. The church will dictate a congregant's life--who can be friends, where to buy a car or house. What to wear, to whom to give money and how much. The concept of free will does not seem to matter. When the Wittmans criticized this system, their lives changed completely. Because they opposed the system of manipulation and also tried to get away from the control and influence of the church leaders, they became part of a confrontation which was partly personal threats to them.
Wittman states that he finds the sexual abuse, the threatening and the church scandals to be more than offensive. The book was written for Christians who find the church to be manipulating their lives and what it is is a way out for victims. It gives steps to take and it shows how easy it is to be hooked into the fraudulent activity of the church.
Wittman's book is personal and it is his writing style that pulls you in. Wittman is brutally direct and his honesty shows through

An amazing book, I loved it! Sep 17, 2009 This was one of the most compelling books I've ever read in my life. I read it in three days; I literally couldn't put it down!
It contains the author's personal testimony and how he and his family were brainwashed as they went deeper and deeper into a cult-like church. They go through a long, horrible ordeal after they wake up and try to escape. Along the way the author shares many wonderful and thought-provoking insights and resources to help others in similar situations.
His writing style just draws you in; very easy, flowing and concise. He is brutally direct and honest, especially about his own failings, which made reading Pigs in the Pulpit really relatable. I've read other books about spiritual abuse, and as far as I know, this book is the only one written in the first person. It's real storytelling rather than dry, clinical case studies on churches and cults. I loved it.
I highly recommend Pigs in the Pulpit, especially for Christians who have been hurt by church leaders they trusted, or may have a friend or loved one involved in a bad church situation or cult. It will give them a lot of answers they've been looking for.
My own family was involved in a Christian church that had an abusive pastor. It too was like a cult, or a nightmare. I wish we had access to this book years ago, it would have saved us a LOT of pain and grief. I was really blessed by this book and plan to read it again and again.
