A Celebratory Tribute To Poetry Mar 01, 2010
By Apex Reviews Whenever the topic of poetry emerges in classrooms worldwide, it's no doubt met with subtle moans and groans of displeasure. To be fair, not everyone finds such subjects as nature, the animal world, and the vague musings of old white-haired men particularly appealing. Despite how it's perceived, though, poetry is nonetheless a vital form of expression that must be appreciated and preserved for posterity, so it's always welcome when it can be recognized and celebrated for the cultural bastion that it is - which is what makes such volumes as Poetically Speaking so much more meaningful.
Throughout the pages of her insightful collection, poet Georgette Lee introduces young readers to the multitude of useful ways in which poetry can be applied in everyday expression. She also highlights the various poetic forms that exist, such as haiku and acrostics, each of which possesses its own unique creative appeal. Combining her presentations with fun, enlightening examples, Lee makes the traditionally arduous task of learning about poetry an engaging, edifying treat.
A richly rewarding literary debut, Poetically Speaking is sure to foster a deep-rooted poetic appreciation in readers of all ages. Kudos to Lee for crafting a well-rounded, celebratory tribute to the ever-underrated art form.

Poetically Speaking: Poems for the Elementary Classroom
Poetically speaking captured the interest of my grades 4-6 students. They enjoy making connections to the poems, and writing similar poems of their own. The section on template poems makes poetry writing simple and very enjoyable, and the inclusion of a chapter on Figurative Language, makes this book a must for all teachers of reading and English/Language Arts.
