Pretty is Just a Face I Make

"My attention was immediately riveted by this novel, a fresh look at material I wasn't sure could be made fresh until I began reading. Even when you've been there, it's easy to forget that strippers work hard for whatever money they make, are often tempted to put themselves in humiliating and dangerous situations, frequently look out for each other, and sometimes call their mothers to cry after a particularly bad night. Elyn Selu knows all this and turns it into a fastpaced, absorbing, extremely moving tale. Read her book. You may be shocked or saddened, but you won't be disappointed." -Poppy Z. Brite, author of LIQUOR

5Heart-touching and eye-opening  Aug 18, 2011
By Beth Patterson
I personally would be terrified to engage in this age-old performing art. Yet reading Ms. Selu's book not only flooded my mind with fresh understanding of the power and beauty of this gig, it also revealed the same elements of life in any other kind of show business: strong friendships, loyalty, betrayal, struggle for understanding from family and friends, vulnerability, glamour, and glory... This book will change your perspective forever.

5Generous, insightful, and compelling  Mar 19, 2005
By Stacey L. Simmons "epona girl"
Selu is a wonderful storyteller. The reader's expectations are completely turned upside-down at everyturn. A page turner par-excellence. This book should be required reading in every women's studies course. The subject matter truly problematizes what is considered women's work, including sex-work, and women's roles. Begs the question be answered, "how do women become EMPOWERED by sex?" Amazing.

5A First-Hand, Well-Crafted Look Into Temptation & Taboo  Nov 04, 2004
By D. Cash
I've had the pleasure of reading this book three times now, and it gets better each time. The story of Lynn starts in a place many of us have been, but it takes us to places many of us will never go. Selu does a great job giving clear, unique voices to her characters. The story is engaging and the New Orleans imagery is vivid. And the subtle references to religion and spirituality throughout the book provide a fascinating added dimension. Get this book and read it. You won't be sorry.
