Immerse yourself with public leaders May 13, 2009
By Wendy Fraser "Public Leadership" provides a rare glimpse into the hopes, challenges and thought-processes of public sector leaders at a very real level. This book is unusual because it allows you to read every question and full response from the interviewees without a lot of subjective commentary. Rather, in the beginning of the book, Dr. Solomon Uwadiale does synthesize the interviews to gather the essential gems of what these extraordinary public leaders express in their chapters. Other than that first chapter, you will immerse yourself into the interviews and it seems like you are there in person. Analyzing the choice of words or reading how long these leaders expressed themselves after certain questions yield important insights into their leadership style and some of the circumstances surrounding public policy issues.
I appreciated reading how our elected officials weigh the complexities of policy decisions with the impact on people, business, the environment, etc. They are extraordinary people with demanding responsibilities yet I found demonstrations of grace, humor, and humility.
Finally, the interviewees are a nice blend of local, state and federal level leaders. Their responses provides important learning for professional public sector leaders, students, or other interested people.

Interesting and enlightening insight into Public Leadership May 05, 2009

This is a must read for practioners in the art of leadership, and students aspiring to leadership roles. Dr. Uwadiale engaging style of presenting how public leaders balance the internal and external political, social and economic enviroments to create a culture of making good decisions in the best interest of the public makes this book an easy read.
An interesting observation from a reader's perspective is that within weeks of the publication of this book two of the leaders highlighted in the book were invited to join the Cabinet of President Obama, another became the County Executive of a major county in Washington, a fourth joined the Executive Policy Committee of a Governor recently elected to serve a second term, and a fifth person joining the cabinet of another Governor. This is a testament to the substantive quality of this book.
Quick read... Excellent resource for your leadership tool kit! May 03, 2009
