RVing Alaska and Canada: A "How to" and "Why not" Book

Sharlene “Charlie” Minshall, a single, solo, full-time RVer for twenty years, criss-crossed North America countless times from Mexico to Labrador, Florida to the Northwest Territories. She toured Alaska and Western Canada five times for a total of two years. This fourth revision reveals “How to” chapters on where to stay, when to go, what to take, road conditions and distances, plus information on border crossing, communications, boondocking, safety, pets, and photography. Tips are scattered throughout the book. One chapter reveals the necessities, pitfalls, and approximate costs of flying into Alaska and renting a RV. “Why not” mapped chapters include all major paved and gravel roads as this author of six RV-related books leads you through her humorous misadventures with Katmai grizzlies, remote villages, the Aurora Borealis, Segway riding, dog mushing and canoeing the Yukon River. Whether you are driving a car, RVing, or an Armchair Adventurer, it is an exciting and helpful book.

I love this revision to Charlie's book...I read it slowly because I wanted to
savour every word and bookmark pages I will return to again and again...Charlie is a
great motivator and superb storyteller...After reading her book, I am in the midst
of planning my own Alaska adventure!!

Rving Alaska and Canada: a "How to" and "Why Not" Book
For Rver's on their first trip to Alaska, Charlene's book is a must read. If you have "been there-done that" you will want to go again. The book details her adventures off the beaten path and into the heartland. Thanks to Charlene I now know what I missed on my first trip to Alaska and plan to go again using her book as a reliable guide. Her love of Alaska and Canada is evident and her practical advice can make anyone's trip rewarding.

5so much fun to read"Charlie"This so much fun to read. Her book makes me want to go again.  Apr 24, 2009

Reading "Charlie"s books always makes me want to go again, but since I can't, I enjoy the trip anyway through her excellent and very personal writing style. If you have met her, get re-acquainted; if not, meet her in all her delightful adventures. It's just like chatting with her as she travels the usual and off-beat roads in Alaska and Canada. Enjoy.

4Good primer, but dated  Feb 03, 2012

This is a great book for one headed to Alaska by RV. Has some entertaining tales, and recommends some interesting places to see. The book is poorly organized (chronologically and geographically incoherent)though, and a major flaw is that there are no maps accompanying the author's travels. Definitely a "buy" for an upcoming trip, especially for first-timers, but get the "Milepost" for the maps.

3More of a Diary than a "How To"  Jan 23, 2012
By Wnytaxman
I admire the author's courage to tackle several trips to Alaska by herself, but I wouldn't consider the book a "How To" by any stretch of the imagination. It's a very interesting diary of her trips and where she went, but I certainly wouldn't put it in the Must Read category for anyone contemplating an Alaska RV trip. Interesting and somewhat helpful would be my best description of the book.
