a worthy sequel Apr 19, 2008 Several weeks ago I randomly came across Edwin Scroggins' delightful book,STRAWBERRY LANE:A MYSTICAL
MEMOIR OF BOYHOOD IN RURAL SOUTH TEXAS and purchased it through Amazon.I enjoyed it so much that I
promptly ordered the sequel,RETURN TO STRAWBERRY LANE.In this edition the author recalls his teenage years
growing up in Pasadena,Texas, culminating with his marriage in 1949.Mr.Scroggins gives a thorough
accounting of the many challenges he faced during his junior and senior high years and his determination
to attend college upon graduation.Due to his parents limited resources,he and his twin brother must work
diligently after school and on weekends to save enough money to attend a prestigious Texas university.
After years of struggle and hard work, the two appear to have achieved their dream only to have one of the
twins denied admission for totally unfair reasons(read the book and find out why). The author is thus separated from his beloved brother for the first time in his life;poignantly,he tells of attending this
institution alone and somewhat bewildered for one unsuccessful year," the most miserable year of my
life." Yet the author perseveres, finding the girl of his dreams and starting a family of his own.
Edwin Scroggins accomplishes what many wish our own grandparents had done:putting down on
paper their recollections of what the world was like during those far-away days of their youth. The author
comes across in both his books as perhaps an average young man in many ways but one who emerges as
a decent human being who stays true to his family and his faith. What better legacy can a grandfather leave
his descendants.
