Roadworks
Roadworks
A cyclist turned pedestrian on the streets of London I fell off my bike on the Edgware Road. I had forgotten that I'd tightened the brakes and when I applied a light touch to them I ended up going over the handlebars. As I lay face-down in the bus lane not wanting to look at the palms of my hands, I noticed the road surface spread out in front of me. As a cyclist you generally don't look down but here I was with my face just inches off a rough and crumbly tarmac, and with the low angle of the sun it seemed beautiful in a way. The bus behind me was patient enough to wait while I admired the view. Having come off your bike, people do allow you a certain time of day that they probably wouldn't otherwise do on London's busy streets. After that I became a pedestrian, looking down wherever I walked. I took my camera with me, and for a year photographed everything that I came across that had the same special quality as that crumbly stretch of a bus lane in a late afternoon sun. I guess you could call it 'finding inspiration in the pedestrian.' This is what I saw.
