What is each knot for ? A purpose for the various types of knots would be nice. And pros and cons.

4rope works  Jun 03, 2010

This book lives up to its title it explains how to make many knots and shows how to make a rope makeing machine in a very easy to understand maner.

4Useful for novice like me  Aug 22, 2011
By Wm F. Tanner Co Inc. "Bill Tanner"
The illustrations allowed me learn some useful knots such as the lineman loop and the taut line hitch. Some of the knots have shortcomings that were not mentioned. For example, the marlin spike used in making a ladder will hold a load in only one direction. Also, the square knot will easily unravel if the wrong standing and running ends are pulled. I would like to see more applications illustrated such as the ladder using the marlin spike.

2Just Adequate- Buy Plus Version?  May 22, 2011
By William D. Latinette "WildLatin"
I bought an earlier (2003) printing of this book.
1) The author is definitely knowledgeable- a 'sage' of knot wisdom.
2) It adequately covers a wide range of knot/rope applications from simple knots to whipping and lashing. There is even a simple plan for a DIY rope-making machine.
3) The illustrations are usable but without specifics on technique.
It is also unsatisfactorily without description of applications or history of the knots or rope mechanisms.
(My printing also was unprofessionally defective with missing or duplicated pages- I believe this has been corrected in later versions.)
4) Bottom Line:
If you want a book, buy the 'Plus' Version- It is what this book should have been. Rope Works Plus
You might also consider the author's more recent CD (with helpful animations) or DVD of advanced lashings. Rope Works Lashings
