Roughneckin': My Life and Times as a Cowboy, Petroleum Engineer and Offshore Drilling Pioneer

This is the autobiography of Robert F. (Bob) Bauer, the man who forged a company that did what few thought possible—to drill for petroleum on the seabed beneath thousands of feet of water. When called upon to serve his country, Bob committed that firm to what has been called the most audacious, technically difficult and expensive secret spy mission in history. From his humble beginnings as a cowboy and oil field roughneck, Bob earned a degree in petroleum engineering. He discovered in himself an entrepreneurial spirit coupled with a “can do” attitude and the abilities of a true leader. These traits allowed him to bring his organization to the very pinnacle of success. The trail they blazed opened the path for others and made deepwater exploration a reality.

5More Than Just Another American Success Story  Apr 24, 2009
By S. Burleson
This true story could only happen in America. Yet it is more than just another tale of American success. The book reveals how one man's determination built a company that led the way to drilling for oil and gas on the ocean floor under thousands of feet of water. And how, when called upon by the U.S. government, that company conducted a dangerous and audacious secret undersea spy mission which has been called one of the greatest espionage efforts in history. The book is highly readable, reveals the protagonist's true character, and above all, is an emotionally moving picture of a time just recently past.

4A Review of Robert F. Bauer's "Roughneckin'"  Feb 08, 2010
By Lou W. Watkins
As an engineering professional, I found Bob Bauer's colorful book both interesting and educational. His stories of the early days of offshore exploration, of inspired trial-and-error carried out under the most difficult and dangerous conditions, are fascinating. Bauer cannot, of course, avoid expressing his own personal dislikes, including government regulation, big business bureaucracy, and the environmental concerns of "whale lovers" and "tree-huggers." For those who can overlook these minor defects, "Roughneckin'" is a valuable memoir of a true pioneer.

An insider's view on the life of a great American man and the life of a great American company. A necessity for all of those who wish to be categorized as oil-field aficionado and an enjoyable read for those who would like to take a step into the life of one of America's greats. A book well worth the read.

5Robert Bauer is the real life John Galt  Apr 24, 2009
By Sparky Hesse
Robert Bauer is the real life character author Ayn Rand has fictionalized as "John Galt" in her popular books. A true "auto" about a strong wordly successful man who did it, "His Way".
