Same War - Different Missions: WWII Memories and Letters Home

This book recounts the personal WW II experiences of four participants in their very own words. The three American and one German shared many similar and, at the same time, very different experiences. The fighting units of the 82nd Airborne (Sobus) and 23rd Infantry (Robinson) contrast with the support provided by the Special Services Company (Foertschbeck). All four men entered the service, American and German, with a sense of loyalty and duty. All served honorably. As the war in Europe was coming to a close three had thoughts of coming home and then going to Japan to "finish the job". The fourth, Hertrich, was captured by the Russians in Hungary and was a prisoner in a labor camp until November 1949.

5Same War - Different Missions  Sep 17, 2009
By T.S. Reader "T. S."
Great, insightful book for anyone who has ever had a relative or friend fighting in war. Hear the real emotions and thoughts about everyday life at war directly, and in real time, from those on the front-lines, rather than from unrealistic Hollywood movies. These soldiers' letters helped me to better understand and feel the powerful need to be connected to family back-home, the hope that camaraderie provides, the struggle to push-on despite paralyzing fears and the sometimes sheer daily boredom of war. Worth every minute reading and every penny spent. Kudos to the author for providing this real-world insight.

5Same War, Different Mission  Sep 11, 2009
By Rapid reader "DJ"
This book presents a very real human insight to war, where most deal with battles, successes and failures. Moreover, you get to "feel" the emotions of the soldiers, both American and German, and how similar the human aspect is for both sides. A great read.

5A great read!  Oct 26, 2009
By Roy W. Troppman
There is no better portrayal into the miseries of war than to read the personal accounts written by the soldiers who fought in them. This book provides just that, both from U.S. soldiers' and German soldier's perspective. The letters to home provide a real-world insight into what the troops faced on a day-to-day basis as well as how each coped with reliving its horrors. Fascinating was the look into their personal perspective of the war and the people/culture/geography of the various lands in which they fought. Also intriguing was the importance of the connection they had with family members back home. All in all a great look into the minds and thoughts of those who fought in WWII.

5Enjoying the book  Oct 08, 2009

I am thoroughly enjoying this book. Reading about history never really interested me, but having known one of the subjects made me realize that the past is more than fiction to me.

5The Greatest Generation  Sep 21, 2009
By P. F. Carrier
Same War - Different Missions is a significant contribution to understanding the sacrifices made by both solders fighting the battles of WWII and those who supported them at home and overseas. Same War - Different Missions details historical events as seen through the eyes of participants in their own private writings as they happened. This approach uniquely and accurately portrays events without the fog of distant memories. These letters show the foundation on which the "Greatest Generation" was built: years-long endurance -- tested in the molds of continuing prayer, haunting homesickness, a few joys and incredible hardships.
