I bought this book for my two young nephews and was so impressed. Serious, important issues are tackled within the text and yet it's pitched at a level kids can understand. Most impressive was the unpredictable story line and the beautiful way that real pictures are married with graphics. Bravo - I hope you come up with more of these wonderful books for children!!
Excellent choice for teaching children about social issues Dec 21, 2009
By Aqua Duramonov First, the coolest part about this book is that there is a Dream Village ticket number that allows the reader to go to the Dream Village website and make a donation. The child gets to decide whether to make a donation towards one of three causes--water, education and food. Dream Village has partnered with non-profits Playpumps International, Camfed and Friends of the World food project respectively, and they direct the donations to those causes.
I love that my child and other readers get to read about social change and then go take immediate action. What an awesome concept!
Second, Saved by the Well is an excellent introduction to the global water crisis for children. The books talks about a village in Mozambique, Africa that did not have access to safe drinking water, and how a pump from non-profit, Playpumps International, made such a huge impact on one village.
The story is engaging, the artwork is nice and overall, the book is fantastic. I love how the concept brings the book back around to the core causes of social awareness, service and taking action. They don't just talk about doing something, they give the reader the tools to do something and be a part of the change. I like the progressive approach to teaching social awareness and responsibility in an age of globalization.
