Sea and Sky

Bird and Fish tempted readers with the age-old question, 'If a bird and fish fall in love, where will they live'? Adrienne Leslie's Sea and Sky, the second novel of her Bird and Fish trilogy answers the question with bountiful compassion as well as fierce devotion to Korean 'sarang' and American gumption. Sea and Sky takes its audience from a drab New York winter to a sultry Seoul spring as favorite characters, Wendy Dale and Jae Won Hyun try to reconnect. Bird and Fish fans will fall under their Korean-American spell since no one can weave a tale as deftly as Ms. Leslie. New fans need not worry, Sea and Sky easily stands on its own as a heartwarming tale where characters embrace readers as if old friends. As before, Leslie will leave you yearning for more.

5Sea and Sky  Feb 01, 2010
By James Fitzpatrick
On the surface, Wendy Dale is a fairly typical twenty-first century woman. Teacher, wife, and mother, her life seems very mundane. But scratch that surface, and a life that is anything but mundane is revealed. Unhappily married to a man rapidly descending into alcoholism, with a daughter suffering from the ravages of Crohn's Disease, and herself battling breast cancer, the death of her best friend, Libby Spring, has left her lonely and feeling isolated. But Libby has left her a legacy which enables her to leave her teaching job and pursue her dream of writing children's books. As she attempts to reestablish a semblance of stability in her now-crumbling world, she day-dreams of her true love, Jae Won, with whom she had shared a single night of ecstasy. Resigning herself to her fate, she slowly begins to adjust, to cope with the harsh realities of each day. But her life is about to be turned upside down, for Libby has left behind a secret, and Wendy is about to discover she has a secret of her own.
On the other side of the world, Hyun Jae Won, Wendy's one time lover, also day-dreams of the red-haired woman who had, for a brief few months, filled his empty life with purpose, and given him hope for the future. Realizing the impossibility of their situation, the two lovers have parted, and Jae Won has returned to his native Korea to pursue his other true love as a Minhwa artist. Through Wendy's machinations, he has supposedly acquired a wealthy patron, but the patron proves false, and Jae Won finds himself experiencing the same lonliness and isolation that Wendy, a world away, is dealing with. But like Wendy, Jae Won's life is soon to be dramatically altered, for Wendy is coming to Korea on quest, and soon the two will be reunited.
At the end of Adrienne Leslie's first novel, Bird and Fish, Wendy Dale and Hyun Jae Won are together, a happily married couple. But the path to their happiness has been neither straight nor smooth. The destination has involved a journey fraught with twists and turns, bumps and pits, and obstacles which have been thrust aside, or surmounted. Set in New York City, USA, and Seoul and (my favorite place in the world) Taegu, South Korea, Sea and Sky relates that journey, a journey that effectively mixes pathos with humor. Admittedly, this is a story women will likely find much more appealing than men, but men who appreciate a good tale of romance (and there are many more of us out there than Madison Avenue would have us believe), sans the sappiness, should thoroughly enjoy Sea and Sky.

5This book is fun, one-of-a-kind, and a testament to how Korean culture affects the U.S.  Feb 19, 2010
By Myung Oak Kim
I love fiction novels and I especially love novels that take you into the worlds of Asian cultures. Sea and Sky is part of a trilogy. The first book is called Bird and Fish, which I adored. I just finished reading Sea and Sky and can't wait for Wetlands. Sea and Sky, like its predecessor, was a page-turner. Once I started reading it, I didn't want to put it down. But the book offers much more than just an engaging love story.
- Sea and Sky offers a fun but extremely accurate way to learn about Korean culture.
- Sea and Sky offers a fascinating window into the world of Korean television dramas, aka hallyu, and South Korea's overall entertainment industry. Thousands of Americans are hooked on Korean dramas and you'll get a sense of the attraction in this book.
I can't wait to read what happens next to Wendy, Jae and Jane.

5Definite MUST Read  Mar 18, 2010
By M. Landis
Korean Drama fans know all about time jumps. We have often wondered what happened in that time jump. This book answers those questions for us and more!

In Sea and Sky we get to see a much different side of Wendy Dale. The sharp witted, professional super woman of Bird and Fish melts away and we see the very warm, very human WOMAN who is Wendy Dale. She laughs, she cries, she loves and she makes mistakes. And she takes the reader along for the ride.

If there was one thing I could change about Sea and Sky it would be to make the evil Koon Ja suffer WAY more than she did. But like a good Korean Drama, everyone finds forgiveness and happiness in the end.

Whether you are a Korean Drama fan or just a drama fan - this book is not to be missed.

5SEA AND SKY ... BRILLIANT  Apr 03, 2010

I am a great fan of adrienne Leslie's first novel Bird and Fish and could not wait until Sea and Sky was published. The world of Jae Wong and Wendy is intricately woven into a journey that circles half the globe. The characters demonstrate pride, honor, friendship and love.
Many questions are answered as the writer words spark with spontaneous passion.
This is a well crafted novel which truly moves the reader --
I was totally absorbed in Wendy and Jae Wong's life. - Brilliant-- a real page turner.

5This is not your mother's romance novel......  Feb 20, 2010
By Chris "Adam & Paige's Mom"
Having read romance/fiction novels for the past 20 years, they can get scripted.
Some authors use a formula. Who wants to pay for the same story over & over?

I think Ms. Leslie has created something really different.
In her first book "Bird & Fish", she introduces her reader to Korea, it's language & culture.
This story gave us insight on a nation of rich heritage & culture.
Plus a wonderful story of a man & woman who are trying to create their destines.
Not starry eyed teenagers, who live on rich country estates.
But real people with jobs, children & everyday life.

In her second book "Sea & Sky" Ms. Leslie draws her readers back into a world of love & hate.
Obligations. Happiness & destiny.
This story catapults you back into the first book. It builds on the characters created in the first story. Bringing the readers mind more full circle in Ms. Leslie's vision.

As a reader you will not be disappointed in Adrienne's eye for detail.
Her love of family, friends & a good bargain!
They say writers , write what they know about. Adrienne Leslie's passions jump right off the page!

Can't wait to see how this literary drama finishes in book #3.
