Selah of the Summit

Selah is a slavegirl, small and dusty, who fetches water from a well. She gazes at the distant mountains that hold things she has never seen--like trees, stars, lakes, and snow. Her Master Regan and The Craft have kept nature from the valleys, damning rivers and turning all to desert. They weave their material spells upon the slaves, and nothing ever changes. Then, one day, Regan summons Selah to serve him at a banquet. Before she steps into the Hall, another slavegirl tells her, “You can be walking along the same dark hallway you have trod for years, and suddenly, around the corner comes unexpected help, and everything changes.” As Selah serves the guests, a stranger in a hooded cloak speaks to her. That very night, Micah leads her from the Keep, across the valley, to meet a band of travelers. They journey through hills, moors, and highlands to Mountain Gate. Selah finds beauty, music, and love in the Maker’s world and Micah. Regan follows, bent to take his slavegirl back. He captures Selah, imprisons her again, and she must face loneliness and The Craft.

5A Perfect Read For Any Age  Aug 25, 2005
By Halzworth Stevenson
Mrs Williams describes this book as "a Christian alternative to Harry Potter", and while it certainly does serve as a splendid substitute, I would have to challenge this premise. Selah of the Summit is a wonderful book for older children and younger teens, yet here it strays from Rowling territory, crossing over with much greater ease to an adult readership. While it is simple and straightforward enough a tale to make a perfect children's read, it is in my opinion mature enough in style and deep enough in content to be a welcome addition to any adult's bookshelf where Harry Potter might be a mere childish diversion.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm neither putting down Potter nor attempting to overniche Selah of the Summit, but this book's content can be measured in layers, not merely a simplistic story. The dilligence in the book's careful buildup, the care in the creation of lovable and yet fully human characters, Lonna's ability to create suspense without compromising on the certainty of the outcome...all these elements make Selah of the Summit a truly endearing book.

But who cares? We've all read endearing books before. Why should you buy this one? Because past the wonderful authoring, there is something of true substance, a story that actually holds meaning for the inquisitive reader. As I said; depth. Every so often in reading it, I paused to look through the spellbinding story to uncover the openly offered gems of wisdom and analogy woven so well and so inobtrusively through the book.

In summary, most books have two levels on which you can read them; what the author is saying and what the author is *saying*. But Mrs Williams writes Selah of the Summit so that the two become the same. The analogy does not drown out the storytelling, nor does the endearing story swamp Lonna's message. Suitable for all ages, it truly is a lovely read.

5Great Alternative to "Harry Potter"  Feb 17, 2004

This is a lovely fantasy novel--yes, there are bad guys and stressful situations, yet the overall message is so supportive that it never got depressing . . . Did I enjoy the book? Definitely--it was a great read. It is a wonderful break from some of the far more "in your face" stories that seem to fill most bookstores these days . . . This book and its anticipated sequels are at least partially intended as an alternative to current fantasy novels for children, such as the "Harry Potter" series. "Selah" is an enjoyable story, and one I'd recommend. I look forward to reading more from Lonna Williams. Reviewed by Barbara Carlson, News Editor for "California Homeschool News."

5It Creates a World in Your Mind  Sep 19, 2002

I am ten years old, and I love "Selah of the Summit" because it creates a whole world that I can see in my mind. It is exciting. The mountains are beautiful, and Selah is brave to leave the hot valley and climb them. A great bedtime story!
