Shadowboxing: One Man's Inspiring Battle With Stroke Recovery

On March 15, 1994, William G. Robertson suffered a massive stroke. He was transported to a regional medical center and lapsed into unconsciousness. Doctors told gathering family he might not make it through the night. But William survived. Today, he lives a full and rewarding life. The stroke robbed him of his career, a long-term relationship and the ability to drive or participate in hobbies he enjoyed. Yet, he believes the event left him a better man. Shadowboxing is an informative and entertaining view of his battle back to the light. It will inspire others recovering from a brain injury, their families and all those who revel in the triumph of the human spirit.

5Inspirational Recovery  Sep 10, 2009
I found "Shadowboxing" to be an enjoyable and informative look inside a stroke survivor's world. Mixing stroke-related insight with tales of growing up in North Carolina, William Robertson expresses his thoughts with humor and humility in a manner that is both enlightening and endearing.

5Fr. Morgan Gardner  Aug 27, 2009
By turns heroic and self-deprecating, folksy and eloquent, the author's conversational prose leads the reader to understand the world of people who are recovering from a devastating physical reversal. His is a story of pain, depression, and disappointment but also of acceptance, courage, and amazing grace. His story also inspires hope for stroke survivors and their families, for he claims with conviction that his experience has made him a better man. His reminiscences of hospitals, physical therapy, and rehabilitation are interspersed with recollections of happier times when he learned the lessons that helped him make sense of his loss and guided him in his continuing journey to wholeness. I found this new book helpful in my work as a chaplain and pastor, and I recommend it to anyone who travels with others from sickness into health.

5"strokes are like fingerprints"!  Aug 23, 2009
SHADOWBOXING made me more sensitive to and aware of the stroke survivor's challenges. I feel myself fortunate to have read this book and thank the author, William G.Robertson, for meeting his adversity head on and teaching us all in the process. I could not put this book down. Before reading SHADOWBOXING I thought a stroke was a stroke. Upon reading, "Do you understand that strokes are like fingerprints? They all have similarities but no two are exactly the same?", I had what is called a light bulb moment! You will enjoy this book and even perhaps find that you too have grown by the experience.
