Shadows of War

It is Baghdad 2005, and Sergeant Joe Busch is holding it together for his men. He has lost many, felt painfully the wounds of combat that have felled good soldiers. During a brutal street fight, Joe is struck down by an enemy’s bullet and wakes up to discover that he is paralyzed. He also discovers that his girlfriend, Sara, is pregnant, leaving him overwhelmed by helplessness and despair. In Shadows of War, written with unparalleled compassion by Army veteran Jacob Lawrence Krapfl, readers find a poignant, brutally honest novel that deals with the horrors of war: the despair experienced by many soldiers during combat; the fears suffered long after their tour of duty is over; and the painful reminder that PTSD—Post Traumatic Stress Disorder—is no imaginary psychological diagnosis, but an invisible and often destructive condition that affects the lives of many soldiers, leaving them helpless to live normal, healthy lives and too often resulting in tragedy.

5Really helps one to understand post traumatic stress syndrome  Mar 14, 2010
I ordered and read this book after seeing a news article about the author, a young man from my hometown. Normally I wouldn't select a war-related book to read. I was impressed! The first couple chapters were difficult reading as the writer moves from scene to scene, from reality to what's going on in the character's head. As I progressed in the book I found this to actually be a very effective tool for conveying the thoughts and feelings of one who was experiencing the "shadows" of war. I felt confused and shared in the confused feelings of the young soldier.

As another reviewer stated, it is graphic. Some of the language and attitudes expressed in soldiers' dialogues disturbed me. I realize that this is part of the reality of time, place and war also. I think the book would be a hard read for someone who has a son or daughter in a war zone. I issue that as a caution only and not to deter anyone from reading the book.

The book is an effective and powerful tool to educate and increase understanding. I have recommended this book to others and will continue to do so. I hope Mr. Krapfl continues to write. He has the technical skills and clearly has stories worth telling.

5Shadows of War Review  Feb 07, 2010
Excellent book. Not too long of a read. Graphic language so I wouldn't advise children reading. Gets you hooked on what is happening. There was one point I had to lay the book down and walk away. Have some tissue handy. I've loaned this book out to several friends who have all loved it. Really makes you feel for our soldiers as they come home and what they still deal with. The war isn't over for them just because they're back home.

5A little slow at the start, but a gripping ending  Dec 29, 2009
I had a little trouble reading the first couple chapters. I was tripped up by a couple minor typos and some word order to the scentences. However, by the time I got halfway through I couldn't put it down. What an amazing story about what is happening to our soliders, something that we all need to wake up to. Thanks for writing it and sharing your story (both real and fictional) with the world.

5an intense and searing portrayal  Dec 16, 2009
of the war in Iraq and its effects on the soldiers who've been deployed there...
Krapfl weaves a compelling narrative and doesn't let the reader off the hook.
A must-read for anyone interested in what really needs to be done to take care of our young people returning from war - and a portrayal of why we need to take care to ensure that they are cared for. The wounded aren't always visible...PTSD requires much more attention than it's been given. Should be required reading for those on Capitol Hill who continue to fund the war machine, but do precious little for the men and women once they return stateside.

5Awesome Read  Dec 05, 2009
This excellent book cover all aspects of the affects of war - on the soldiers, their families and their loved ones. It gives a detailed glimpse into the soldiers' world and thoughts, and what they go through. My heart hurt as I read it (in one sitting), as well it should have. This is an excellent and well-written book. I have tremendous respect for the author.
