Really helps one to understand post traumatic stress syndrome Mar 14, 2010
By C. Sudmeier I ordered and read this book after seeing a news article about the author, a young man from my hometown. Normally I wouldn't select a war-related book to read. I was impressed! The first couple chapters were difficult reading as the writer moves from scene to scene, from reality to what's going on in the character's head. As I progressed in the book I found this to actually be a very effective tool for conveying the thoughts and feelings of one who was experiencing the "shadows" of war. I felt confused and shared in the confused feelings of the young soldier.
As another reviewer stated, it is graphic. Some of the language and attitudes expressed in soldiers' dialogues disturbed me. I realize that this is part of the reality of time, place and war also. I think the book would be a hard read for someone who has a son or daughter in a war zone. I issue that as a caution only and not to deter anyone from reading the book.
The book is an effective and powerful tool to educate and increase understanding. I have recommended this book to others and will continue to do so. I hope Mr. Krapfl continues to write. He has the technical skills and clearly has stories worth telling.

Juggling Act Between Iraq and Iowa Nov 21, 2009
By Barbara L. Funk
"Trailtracker"
Whew---do NOT exit this ride until it comes to a complete stop! This book is emotionally IN--tense!
Every word is carefully chosen as the author weaves his way around one emotional land mine after another! This book serves a real purpose in letting the reader peek inside the very complicated juggling act a combat soldier must manage between the world in Iraq and one in Iowa and how dreams can betray him.
This is one of the most gut-wrenching books I've ever read. It is open, raw and gritty.
The book is masterfully pulled together to give readers a lot to think about concerning our soldiers' residual "Shadows of War" regarding PTSD and trying to find their place back in American society.
Finally, the author urges us as a nation to wake up and figure out how to help our service men and women make the transition back home after war. This book is cry to raise that awareness and lead the charge before we lose one more soldier in that dark shadow of transition.
Amazing Nov 18, 2010
By TMG Krapfl does just an amazing job painting a picture of what our troops go through everyday both in the war zone and when they come home. Like many other readers, I was crying as I read the end of the book, knowing that this is real, it is not some Hollywood story made to draw in a crowd.
I've known people who went to war, but have always been afraid to ask them what it was like for fear of bringing up bad memories. Stories they have openly shared are fascinating to me and Krapfl does a good job of telling a story that many may find to painful to talk about.
I can't say thank you enough to Krapfl and all the service men and women who make my life so comfortable here in the USA. You have opened my eyes and made me appreciate even more what we have.
Shadows of War Review Feb 07, 2010
By Bobbi Jo Kraszewski Excellent book. Not too long of a read. Graphic language so I wouldn't advise children reading. Gets you hooked on what is happening. There was one point I had to lay the book down and walk away. Have some tissue handy. I've loaned this book out to several friends who have all loved it. Really makes you feel for our soldiers as they come home and what they still deal with. The war isn't over for them just because they're back home.
A little slow at the start, but a gripping ending Dec 29, 2009

I had a little trouble reading the first couple chapters. I was tripped up by a couple minor typos and some word order to the scentences. However, by the time I got halfway through I couldn't put it down. What an amazing story about what is happening to our soliders, something that we all need to wake up to. Thanks for writing it and sharing your story (both real and fictional) with the world.
