!00% recommended! A great teaching resource! Mar 03, 2010 I have 7th grade Language Arts classes and the students had the usual pre-conceived notions about Shakespeare. Before we commenced studying this play, we used the 10 person script in class. The students LOVED the play and clamored for speaking parts. The experience "broke the ice" for my classes and made the original play far more accessible for everyone. I was able to reference this resource throughout the unit. I will definitely use it again! Mr. Kelso took a personal interest in what we were doing which was an added bonus!
I can do this! Nov 04, 2009 I have to say I was a bit nervous even thinking about attempting drama with my 5th grade AIG students(not may area of comfort!) but after a collegue showed me this book I decided to "give it a try." I was so amazed at how do-able it was. My students have been so excited and really getting in to the parts that we are talking about attempting another one of the Playing With Plays performances! This book is user and student friendly and is a great way to incorporate literature, drama, and cooperative groups. I highly recommend this book and would love to have other titles. If I can do this.....
Excellent Resource! Oct 26, 2009 This is a great resource for elementary school teachers. It is affordable, has a great online resource to go along with it, and makes Shakespeare's work come alive in fun and entertaining ways for students. The book is written so that you can present the play with your class no matter how many students you teach! Students can perform the play in language familiar to them while incorporating Shakespeare's most famous lines. It truly needs to be a series! Check out the author's website for the insult generator and clip of Shakespeare in the classroom...and try to wait for him to play around with more of Shakespeare's plays for your class to perform!
Flexible and Humorous May 19, 2009 Bought the book to use with kids at a summer camp, and after reading through it, my understanding of A Midsummer Night's Dream has never been better. It is very accessible. I was happy to learn that with each of the different sized casts, even though there were less/more characters, the story still made sense. The language is all things kids will understand, and the (clearly marked) lines from Shakespeare's original work will make kids feel like they really can do Shakespeare. From reading the Foreword of the book, anybody can tell that Brendan Kelso really was happy to be able to put this book together and share it with kids. Am excited to try it out at camp and will post again after using it.
Make Your Kids a Fan of the Bard Nov 17, 2008 Through our local parks and recs program my daughter acted in all of these plays. So I had to have the book when it came out. This approach to Shakespeare takes out all the intimidating vocabulary and brings the great William Shakespeare down to a level everyone can relate to--his supremely wonderful and fun story lines. These plays were a springboard to my daughter's newfound passion for literature. Pinch me, I must be dreaming.
