An Enchanting Bird's Eye View Aug 09, 2007
By Catherine Hassan With Shuisheng the Mallard, Chen Likai has invited us to see a bird's eye view of China, traveling with the small band of ducks as they migrate south for the winter. It is also a trek through the first year of life for the young duck, from the time his mother sits on the eggs until he becomes a leader of his family. Mr. Chen, a Chinese native who has taught English for many years near Beijing, has crafted a tale that weaves many other stories together. As the migrants make their way, there are chapters of around nine pages that contain individual episodes full of events or smaller stories, all written in a flowing traditional Chinese style. Each of the ducks has his or her own personality: Taotao the funny one who brags a lot, shy Lily, and Aunt Chunhua who takes on the leadership role. They make friends along the way with other animals, but also run into some dangerous enemies. Uncle Hare tells a legend about dinosaurs in one island covered with bones. When they reach the sea, Aunt Chunhua tells a story of dragon kings. While it is full of action, some sadness and some happiness, it is also chock full of culture and teachable moments for any parent working with young children. Geography, study of animals and their habitats, and many more possibilities abound. Oh, and art, as well. The author illustrated the book himself, with lovely traditional style line drawings.
I really enjoyed reading this delightful book myself. There was so much more to it than I had envisioned. It is an entertaining children's book with a great deal of substance. Older children can read it themselves at their own pace, but parents (or babysitters or teachers) could easily read to younger ones as each chapter can be read aloud in about 15 minutes.
