Silencing the Drums

Grand and sweeping, this delightfully American tale splays the innocence of youth against the harsh realities of war—its unseen, veiled, and hapless victims and how they learn to cope in the transformative world after WWII. In Silencing the Drums, new author Thomas Shipley writes an allegoric and powerful tale of the tenderness and foibles of blind justice, which is found in war and everywhere. Set in the open vales of southern Virginia in the 1940’s, a goodhearted fourteen year old named Billy Grayson who has lost his father in the war finds the road to salvation is not necessarily paved with good intentions when he is sent from his native New York City to explore his Southern heritage over the course of a summer. During this summer, he and his cousin, Anna Wainwright, seek a reckoning with an evil man and the town that has abided him.

5I Want More  Mar 14, 2009
By Virginian
Mr. Shipley's journey back in time, to a simpler life in rural Virginia, transported me to a similar time in my youth in Pennsylvania. His characters literally came to life as I remembered friends I grew up with and adventures we shared. His words paint a vivid tapestry of post-war life along the James River filled with the innocence of youth and drama of racial overtures one would expect in the South. While the book is set in fictional "White Hollow, Virginia", I can't help but feel it is based on places Mr. Shipley has been. Having lived in Virginia for the past 50 years, the descriptions of places along the James and in the town of White Hollow seemed familiar and reminded me of places I`ve been. From Chapter 1, "Silencing the Drums" lets the reader know that something unpredictable will happen and it doesn't disappoint. I wanted more. This is a must read.

5I don't want to finish it!  Mar 06, 2009
By Anne 014 "Anne 014"
When this book arrived- I sat down, slipped off my shoes and travelled back to a Virginia I only thought I knew. Mr. Shipley's characters are vivid and described so effortlessly I only want to know more. His ability to turn a phrase is top notch. I'll be back when I'm finished- for now, I'm just dangling my feet off a pier, lost in another world.

5Great Read!  Mar 03, 2009
By John Frazer
The author did a wonderful job of putting the reader back in time, highlighting both the beauty and innocence of post WWII America and the open ugly racism that existed as well. The characters came to life on the pages and made me want to follow them further in their lives. I was really impressed with the writing, especially for a first novel.

1) Awesome book, once I started reading it I could not put it down. If you are a fan of Stand By Me, you will love Silencing the Drums.

2) The opening line had me captivated! I could not stop reading until I was finished. The book ended and I wanted more because I enjoyed reading it so much. I loved the setting, the timing in our history and all of the characters, especially Anna.
