5A must read if you are working to improve yourself and your relationship  Jun 22, 2008
By Ashna Vohra
As a Social Worker, I read a lot of books on understanding human nature. "Silent Separations: Broken Hearts in Unbroken Relationships" is a powerful tool to understand the distance that gets created between couples and what you can do to bridge the gaps and come together to develop a relationship that has depth and strength. With divorce rates where they are, the information in this book is necessary and critical.

One of the concepts that really resonated with me is the idea of the "mental tape." We record all times the other person has wronged us, all of their faults, and all the negative feelings we have towards them. When the tape if full of bad feelings, then we start to get triggered by everything the person says and does. The author advises us to keep emptying the tape frequently and not hoarding the negative feelings by dealing with each situation independently without bringing the past into it. We could all benefit from examining the tape we have of our partners.

The book is very hands on and easy to read. It gives concrete tools anyone can use. It incorporates mindfulness principles which research shows are very effective in changing behavior and maintaining lasting change. I would highly recommend the book to anyone who is on a path of self growth for themselves and in their relationships.

5in a relationship? young or old - this book's for you!  Jun 12, 2008
By Rachna Vohra
A great and easy read! This book tells it like it is. Whatever you thought you knew about how and why you are acting a certain way in your relationship - think again! With chapters entitled "mental tape", "aggressiveness", "maturity", and "expectations", you can expect a full roster of concepts that will make you rethink right and wrong, his fault and her fault, and so many other things we do in relationships. In the section entitled "final frontiers", Mr Puri gives you pearls of wisdom that can help you transform your own self and your relationship for the better. Young or old, this book applies to everyone because we are all in relationships of some kind - father-daughter, husband-wife, friend, family, foe.
