Sins of the Fathers Nov 02, 2007
By Jude Urbanski SINS OF THE FATHERS, Book 3, Secrets of the Heart Series
By Elisabeth Hewitt Bantz
Book Surge Publishers 2004
ISBN: 1-59109-238-8
Fiction
Bantz continues the generational saga of the Solomon and Christianson families as they love Melissa Grant into untangling and facing the multi-layered lies and deceit which have held her and her family bound, as if with an invisible cord. Had sins of the fathers been passed on to an innocent generation?
Melissa neither understands her young father's sudden death nor the erratic behavior of her unsound and desperate mother, who spirits her away from all that's familiar. Only when Melissa suffers a life threatening accident does she learn the cause of her mother's secretiveness and paranoia all these years. Melissa is the one who flees then.
A new college graduate, Melissa is ready to begin her dream job when a telephone call propels her reluctantly to return to all that she had fled in effort to rescue a mother spiraling downward into alcoholism. The Christianson twins are there for Melissa and her mother's slow healing and restoration.
Bantz strongly views sin as cause for binding many with unhappy lives, but she, just as strongly, believes that grace shines brighter through the redemption of Christ. Her characters are brought into loving relationships with Jesus.
There is a large cast of characters, each with fascinating stories. At times this seemed to overshadow the main characters.
Intriguing story teller Kinzey White again opens and closes the novel, placing a nice hook for book four.

Sins of the Fathers Sep 17, 2007

Nothing about Melissa Gregory's family is normal, and her young mind can't comprehend why. When she is nine, tragedy strikes, and the secrecy and obsessiveness accelerate. Her father's sudden death sends her mother into hiding to an obscure village in Illinois' heartland. Almost as difficult as dealing with her loss is the unknown, the new town, and the new school Melissa must face.
As a teen, Melissa runs away from her mother's worsening schizophrenia, away from her new-found friends, and back to Chicago. It is only when a family friend calls the day Melissa graduates from design school insisting that she come back and help her now-alcoholic mother that Melissa resigns herself to finally face the family demons. With the help of her "heartland" friends Rebekah and Adam Christianson (especially Adam) and their family (especially their Aunt Ruth) she unearths the sins of the fathers that have haunted her family for generations. Secrets exposed lose their power, and healing is able to begin.
Keeping the many characters straight may at first be a problem, but as the story plays out, it becomes easier. Worth the effort. Book 3 in the 4-book Secrets of the Heart series, a generational saga.
