Excellent Book Oct 18, 2008
By Steven L. Hayes As the director of Novus Medical Detox, we see the wreckage caused by prescription drugs on a daily basis. As Ms. McGinnes so clearly points out, addiction causes grief not only for the addicted person but also for the family. This "monster" sucks away retirement funds and bankrupts the families of the addicted ones who want only to help their addicted children.
This is a book that all parents should read and show to their children. From the stories told by the parents of these addicted ones who did not survive their addiction do we see and understand that the wounds caused by addiction never truly heal.

Eye Opening Oct 16, 2008
By Lisa Cappiello Slaying The Addiction Monster offers exactly what is needed to educate EVERYONE about drug addiction in the 21st century. An "In Your Face" approcah; cold hard facts combined with utterly heart breaking real life stories of families whose lives have been destroyed by the "Monster". As with her first book (I Am Your Disease) Sheryl Letzgus McGinnis once again provides hope that the steryotypical image of addicted people placed by society on those struggling with disease of addiction will be replaced with understanding and compassion.

"Draws you in" from the very first pages Aug 04, 2010

"Changing Lives Foundation"
If you believe your life has not been touched by the monster of addiction--you will most likely change your mind after reading "Slaying the Addiction Monster." From the very first pages you are drawn into the overwhelming grief and everlasting love of a mother for her lost child.
Sherry McGinnis describes addiction and what it did to her son Scott:
"Addiction usually does not afford us a second chance. It completely takes over the victim's mind and body. When you look into the face of your addicted child, you're not really seeing him or her. You are merely seeing a shell that resembles your child, because hidden inside is the Monster who is calling all the shots."
This book is a collection of heartfelt, gut wrenching, honest accounts and bits of wisdom from parents who have "been there." One parent writes: "When your child takes poison repeatedly to cope with living or because some part of his brain malfunctions or because he just likes getting high, or because he feels hopelessly hooked, you rip your guts out and stuff them back inside yourself, trying to save them from themselves. Sooner or later that child self-destructs right in front of you while your hands are tied. It's one of the cruelest experiences any parent can ever suffer."
Along with many emotional stories, we also read volumes of practical advice, written by parents who have learned valuable lessons firsthand and who hope to spare others the expense, stress, anger and wasted time they have experienced. One mother writes: "The best piece of advice that I received was to stop trying to understand it; It is what it is."
This book is a treasure-trove of information, advice, and true-life accounts of real people and their stories of how they dealt with addiction in their families. After reading this, anyone dealing with addiction in their family will realize that they are surely not alone. Others are willing to help . . . just reach out and ask.

Living with an addicted person? Then this book is for you. Sep 27, 2008

Slaying the Addiction Monster is filled with information including the latest scientific research by leading addiction researchers, information on how to perform an intervention, information on the teen brain (yes they really are different from us)how to tell if you're an enabler, signs to look for if you suspect your child is using drugs. There is also heartfelt advice from parents who have been through this.
This is not a pedantic piece of literature but is an honestly written book on the problem of drug addiction in our society today. Read what other parents have to say who have lived with an addicted child. They open their hearts to you and tell you what they wish they had known before their own children succumbed to the Addiction Monster.
It also contains excerpts from I Am Your Disease (The Many Faces of Addiction)which features stories by 40 parents telling of their struggles and heartache dealing with an addicted loved one. You will see that you're not alone in this battle.
