the trip doesn't end, even if you're left wanting more... Mar 28, 2006 I should have anticipated this book years before it arrived but that's another story and, anyway, a pleasant surprise.
I read this book as soon as I received it, put it down, and picked through it until I'd read it all again.
I still love walking into the book, like an intern or other fan getting a peek behind the curtain of an elusive someone I've wanted to know. That is, we aren't introduced as much as Included into the life of Ms. Daugherty. I felt, as she shared things, that I'd already been interested in her and she was merely granting me insight I'd waited to hear. ...but as the book goes on I felt more the spectator and less the participant.
Perhaps my feeling at the beginning of the book was unique, perhaps I made more of it than it was to be but, as I read on, I felt my grasp on the hand slip and then somehow was outpaced.
Now, that is to say that I found myself enjoying and at home with the writing and that created the feeling, through much of the read, that I was missing out on more of what was good.
As a first book - and a travel book no less (and assembled, no doubt, from vast amounts of notes, photographs, personal rememberances and ephermal notions spliting fact and intention...) - it is conceivable that concern for the reader may have caused some text to be cut. ...or, in the interest of the pacing of tongue or the experience of a long drive it may have made sense to meet and leave people quickly, suggesting having lingered instead of lingering, and making a clean break to keep the reader moving. I can't know that that wasn't the best choice. Instead, I'll say that the people of this tale still visit me time and again, and the author as well, and I think to myself that I'd like to have spent a little more time together, gotten to know them a little bit more.
In any case, I'll be taking this trip again and to that I'll toast her and her story.
...and Marley.
Great sharp witted book Jan 14, 2006 Little disclaimer here,I know the author. I haven't seen Kelly in years until a few weeks ago though and just found out she wrote this book. So on her suggestion went out and bought it and surprisingly I didn't call her up and demand my money back. I found the adventures of Kelly and her pooch very entertaining and enjoyable. She is a great writer the book was a joyful journey of a young woman just starting out in life. Chapter three was read more than once here ,kind of hits home to her real thoughts and expieriences to this point in her life. I have recomended the book to many of the people I have come across in my travels as well. I think all walks of life will enjoy this as it has a little of something for everyone to enjoy and can relate to male or female. Can't wait to see if she comes up with a new book in the future. Next time don't try Oprah to promote it as it's not her style ,take my advice and call Imus. P.S. Kelly if you read this you can forward my cut as your self promoting unofficial agent to Todd.
English teachers take notice Jan 10, 2006 Kelly Dougherty has written a novel that English teachers can use. The book will appeal to the young minds of the English literature classes of today and be a natural complement for studying Steinbeck.
I was involved from the first page. I found myself waiting for the next town, the next person, the next adventure. Humor and wisdom are there, but not "in your face," just nice and normal. With straight prose, natural and colorful, she shares her travels with ease.
I enjoyed the conversational quality of her writing. People and events were real and her observations on life both insightful and meaningful.
As the women in Carmel, I too want to be a part of her adventuring.

Youll enjoy the ride Dec 31, 2005 This book was recommended to me by a friend and I am so glad I read it. Descriptively written about life on the American road that puts you in the passenger seat. This book does a great job of showing we are all on a journey toward human connection. Sleeping with Steinbeck is at times laugh out loud funny, at times insightful, but all the times honest. This first time author is surprisingly open about her feelings, vulnerabilities, fears and desires. I couldnt put it down, wonderful book from a refreshing new author.
