4For the monsters under the bed  Mar 06, 2007
By Armchair Interviews
Ben Perry is afraid to go to sleep, and so is his beagle puppy, Panda. Even though Ben's mother checks under the bed and assures Ben that there are no boogieman or monsters hiding under there, Ben is still afraid, especially when he sees the dark shapes of the tree moving outside his window.

Ben's other two beagles hurry to comfort him, and beagle Penny tells Ben a story about when she was afraid on the Fourth of July when she was just a puppy. Will Penny's story help Ben and Panda go to sleep?

Sleepytown Beagles: Penny's 4th of July is a book geared for children ages four and up. I read the story out loud to my two-year old and my five-year old. It held their interest, though it definitely isn't for two-year olds. My five-year old thought the story was scary, but she likes the story enough to want to look at the book and pictures over and over, and has even asked me to read it to her several times.

The book isn't the best written story I've read, but my children didn't seem to mind. The book stresses how nice a place "Sleepytown" is for children (and beagles) and how sometimes we can take wrong turns and go to "Nightmareville" and if we do, we need to turn around and go the other direction.

It also stresses that we need to obey our parents, even if we are scared and just want to run away, because parents know best, so it has some good lessons for children to learn.

Parents might also want to check out their Web site for some coloring pages to print out. There are also some word search puzzles and a word jumble too.

Armchair Interviews says: Story that hits on a child's fear of night.

5Perfect for children of all ages!  Nov 20, 2006
By Lisa M. Chavez-Melo
As new parents, reading to and teaching our child is on the top of our priority list. Panda Meets Ms. Daisy Bloom blends an imaginative story with an important life lesson and the colorful illustrations capture our daughters attention. We loved it so much, we ordered it for our neice and nephew! We think this may become a regular bedtime book!

5I DO LIKE THIS BOOK AND THIS SERIES  Mar 17, 2009
By D. Blankenship
I have to admit that I am sort of stuck on these series by author Timothy Glass. The Sleepytown Beagles have quite a lot to offer on several different levels. The particular book being reviewed here, Panda Meets Ms. Daisy Bloom introduces Panda, an adventuresome pup to gardening and plant life. He is shown a new plant, a daisy, by Ben, the young boy of the family and by Mrs. Perry, the mom. It is a small flower, just popping its head up and starting to bud. Like all puppies, both human and canine, Panda is curious and impatient to see what will happen and where this strange new plant came from. Well the answer is obvious...let's dig it up and find out! And here the problems for poor Panda begin and so do some lessons in life.

After admitting to Penny and Gunner, the big beagles of the household what he had done, they tell Ben, the little boy. At this point the beagles and boy take off to Sleepytown and end up talking to the gardener there about how to save Mrs. Perry's flower, Daisy Bloom.

The advice Panda receives is a simply one. Give the flower lots of love, attention and HAVE PATIENCE!

This is a wonderful little story that a child of four and up will instantly relate to. It teaches that love, patience and companionship can cure many ills in this world and this is a lesson that children simply cannot learn soon enough. Through the use of his charming beagles, Timothy Glass has given the children reading the book (or having it read to them) a valuable lesson in life without being preachy or overbearing with it...something I have noted that even little kids catch on to real fast and resent.

Now I know I have a soft spot in my heart for this book, and in fact this entire series because I am a "dog person," and in addition to that, spent quite a number of years as a young boy running with a pack of beagles (I mean this literally) and do love this breed of dog. That is really beside the point though. This is a very charming book and a great introduction to a wonderful series. The only problem I have with this entire work, and I think it is because I am now an adult (well, sort of) is that the transition from Sleepytown to reality is a bit jerky and difficult for me to follow. Now that being said, when this book is read to children, they seem to have no problem what-so-ever with this aspect of the work. If the kids like it and can understand while relating to it, far be it from me to criticize.

This work, along with the other Sleepytown Beagles books would be a wonderful addition to any child's library. These little books make absolutely great bedtime reading. The art is simply and charming and the stories actually teach in entertain at the same time. I do highly recommend this work. Your kids will love it.
