The Unapologetic Queen of Mean Oct 12, 2009
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers SOLSTICE is a story within a story about an old witch who tells the misadventures of her life to a 10-year-old boy named Newell. Scenes from her life that are too sexually explicit are told to Solstice's feline maid, Constance. This story, told in the language of fantasy, is extremely original and is sure to be a refreshing epic for fantasy lovers. The story begins when Newell arrives on an aging Solstice's doorstep. Solstice, delighted to tell the tale of how she became the world's most famous and powerful witch, delivers her life story in descriptive detail downing cognacs and cocktails all the way.
The combination of awkward sentence structure and verbose vocabulary, at times, drowned the story. It is clear that Sturgis is a talented writer. The parts of the story where Sturgis is more subtle is where his talent truly shines. There are moments that are told with so much depth and emotion, characters and the story are more accessible to readers. The style of going back and forth from past to present took away from the quality of the story. It made the plot choppy and a bit hard to follow. The characters are rich and vibrant throughout the novel. Solstice herself is the unapologetic Queen of Mean who rules the pages with an iron fist. Even in her childhood Solstice is cruel and cold-blooded, the extent of which makes for a very interesting read. But nothing stops this ambitious witch.
Fantasy lovers will enjoy this colorful new coming-of-age saga that is sure to scandalize readers for generations to come.
