Some Kind of Plant: Learning while Teaching in Taiwan and Hong Kong 2003-2009

Lively memoir of the author’s observations while teaching in Asia, culled from his witty writings home, providing singular classroom and tourist experiences for the armchair traveler. What happens in these Asian classrooms is a real eye-opener for anyone who has never experienced teaching Chinese students, western-style, in their environment. The author’s visits to Asian historic sites and his characterizations of street life along the way add amusing insights to his descriptions of Taiwan and Hong Kong. In addition the author’s humorous reactions to airport and airline circumstances enhance the reader’s enjoyment. All these events are adroitly woven into the narrative and make for a compelling, vivid page-turner.

5I loved this book and wish I could have such an adventure in teaching  Nov 16, 2009
I truly enjoyed this fun, readable, touching book. As a teacher, I certainly relate to the experience of learning while you teach and have curiosity about what it would be like to teach across cultures as Mr. Heath did. The book puts the reader in the author's shoes and mind about the experience of his regular journeys to teach in Asia. There are many funny stories, but the best parts are about the enduring relationships he built with his students.
