Truly engaging, fascinating, and thoughtful novel Nov 22, 2009
By D. Diehn Seth Roffler has done what every Sci-Fi author sets out to do: take the dilemmas, quandaries, issues of our generation and generations past, set them in a foreign, expansive, complete, and fascinating universe and see what happens. Through his two central characters--a curious girl named Ashley and a giant 9-foot grotesque alien named Stone--Roffler explores the great questions. Ashley is allowed to work through her issues of individuality, family, the pursuit of knowledge and whether that pursuit is a positive end unto itself, and Stone and his actions allow us to question what it means to belong to something larger, what makes a being a being, and at what point do ones actions mean that one is no longer oneself. Based on the nature of the questions, this could be heady, pretentious stuff, but it's not. Roffler takes us along for the ride, slowly unveiling the universe, the characters, and the moral implications of the universe around them.
Out of all of this, I only walked away with one complaint: there are times in which the characters actions seem too one-dimensional. Ashley is curious; she asks questions and puts herself directly into harms way to get answers. And while this seems like motivation enough, I found myself asking whether her base desire could have been more rounded. However, with how well the story strings along, with how comprehensive the universe is, I have a feeling that some of these potential problems will go away with the next two volumes.
Stone is a great read, one which I breezed through in mere days. At every turn of a page, you want to turn another and another until, sadly, it's all over. With Volume 2 just below the horizon, do yourself a favor, purchase and read.

Blown Away! Aug 18, 2009
By Shari Lynn Lau "Stone", by author Seth Roffler, is by far the most original and creative science fiction works I have ever come across. This is not your typical Hollywood alien invasion storyline. The depth of Roffler's imagination is exposed by the intricate and exciting plot. The description of each character makes them the most believable and tangible characters I have read about in a long time. I instantly felt a connection to them and became unable to stop following them on their amazing journey. The next book is already a must read for me.

Utterly engaging, a truly original story sure to launch a career Jul 24, 2009
By Justin M. Johnson Like an Oreo cookie of goodness, this novel by author Seth Roffler is dark on the outside, and filled with crisp white pages adorned with a sequence of words and phrases so compelling I could hardly put it down.
I'm a sucker for sci-fi, but I don't allow myself to dip in too often. Battlestar, of course caught my fancy, as well as Firefly and the usual suspects (Star Trek, etc etc). However, it's been a long while since I sat down and enjoyed science fiction in its written form. I had been so bombarded with the obscene, masturbatory multi-million dollar effects of Hollywood I wasn't accustomed to the absolute treat of letting a supremely talented storyteller take the helm of my imagination and let me form the effects within my head. No Michael Bay required. This book reads like a blockbuster, and you won't be disappointed.
"Stone"s alien races are ones like I've never encountered before, but Roffler's vivid descriptions make them pounce, fighting and screaming, off the page. I won't spoil anything for you. Get the dang thing yourself!
I am going to be passing this around to everyone I can evangelize. I'm excited for the next installment and will be pre-ordering as soon as is possible. "Stone" is an unforgettable ride that I fully intend to spread as far and wide as I can.

Setting this story down is not an option... Jul 01, 2009
By James McKenneth A brief warning to other Amazon users considering the purchase of Stone: please be sure you have ample hours to devote to the reading of this story, as you simply will not be able to resist the urge to keep turning the pages.
The Story: Intense storylines and gripping emotional moments help Stone defy any categorization as simple "science fiction." The hauntingly realistic tale of alien colonization and human destruction is certainly frightening and enthralling in its own right, but the amazing character development and interweaving plots are what really sold me on Stone as a fantastic novel. The story is written in such a compelling and powerful manner that, upon completion, you will likely find yourself wondering aloud what happens next to Ashley, the rest of the Latners, and the human race as a whole.
The Author: To think that this compelling and gripping of a story can be an author's first published work is astounding. Seth Roffler obviously has a deep reservoir of literary skill from which he is drawing for Stone. One can only hope that the floodgates are soon to open and we will all have the pleasure of enjoying more of Roffler's works in the very near future.
Waiting for the sequel... Aug 17, 2009
By Kelly Bean I bought this book looking for something different to read and I was not disappointed! Even if you aren't a fan of traditional "sci-fi" don't walk away from this book without taking a look inside.
Seth Roffler moves his story along in a very natural way, allowing characters and readers to fully absorb the current situation before placing them in another perilous scenario! Stone is an easy, quick read that will have you checking Amazon for the sequel when you are done!
I love the descriptive quality of Roffler's writing - he is able to place readers right alongside the characters in the run-down buildings they inhabit.
I will continue to look forward to Roffler's books as they come out!
