Strip Built Canoe: How to build a beautiful, lightweight, cedar strip canoe

The strip building method was first introduced in the late '60s and has enjoyed an ever expanding following over the years. Little has changed in the basic method of construction; however, over the years new techniques and numerous refinements have been introduced, many of which you will find here. The one thing that has remained constant is that unquestionably, the popularity of strip built watercraft comes from the natural beauty of the wood they are made from. When coated with clear resin and fiberglass, the rich tones and colors of the cedar strips cry out to be touched and admired. The premise behind this book is that if you take your time, approach the project thoughtfully, and follow the guidance provided here, you will be able to successfully build a beautiful strip canoe without breaking the bank. Anyone with a little determination and patience can build one of these craft.

5Strip Built Canoe  Feb 21, 2010
This is an excellent book for the beginner and experienced craftsman. Easy to read with detailed plans and explanations. I have searched for a long time for a book with this much detail. If you are interested in building your oun canoe this is the book to buy.

5Very helpful for all  Feb 28, 2009
A great buy. This book has so many new ideas and techniques. I especially like the coverage on ripping the strips. It's clear to see that taking the time to make well made strips really saves a lot of time and effort overall. I was surprised how easy it is to create patterns using different colors of wood to make dotted line strips. I highly recommend this book for anyone that is considering building a canoe. The extensive pictures and illustrations cover every aspect so even a first time builder like me had no problem understanding each step.

5Highly recommeded  Feb 18, 2009
A must read for anyone planning on building a strip built boat, be it a canoe or kayak. The author has included many innovative techniques including some very cool rope clamps for stapleless construction and extensive coverage of the fiber glassing process. Everything is covered from ripping the strips to making monkey fist grab handles.

2One trick pony  Jan 27, 2009
The rope clamp technique for stapleless construction is the only thing in this bok that doesn't seem to have come directly from Building the Strip Canoe by Gil Gilpatrick (much of this book reads like it came out of Gil's writing) or Canoecraft by Ted Mohr. Both of them provide clearer instructions and photos than you'll find here. They provide greater value with more plans documented, too. Canoecraft also provides instructions for stapleless construction if that's the route you'd like to take.

5Great Book  Aug 02, 2008
Strip Built Canoe by Randy Folsom is a fantastic book especially if you have never built a cedar strip canoe before. He effectively explains every step of building a canoe and of course, adds his own insight which improves upon conventional construction methods. Above all, one of the best features is the authors website which has a support email address allowing you to ask him questions if you need additional information. There are many books out there on this subject which I have read through but in my opinion this one has helped me out the best.
