Pieces of Life May 28, 2008 Wonderful book. Reading through this, not only from the perspective of an artist, but as a human being, gave me my first Eureka!-That's-how-it-works moment. Mari Gorman shines her light on the mystery of how it all connects together, not simply for actors, but for anyone who has ever drawn breath and asked the eternally ubiquitous question 'why?'. Bravo.
Great Book! Mar 07, 2008 This is a great book. I have known and studied with the author for many years and was an actor in her theater company in Los Angeles that worked in Strokes in the 1980's. I've been directing for ten years and find my understanding of Strokes invaluable in my efforts to bring scripts and performances to life. This book has served to deepen my understanding of the author's insightful discovery as well as the workings of life in general. I think anyone can find something valuable in this book and directly apply it to their efforts in any field of endeavor.
STROKES;Opens a new window on acting and life Mar 06, 2008 I read this book on the reccomendation of a well known Los Angeles coach and it, indeed, is an amazing blueprint for the creation of characters and an intricate study of behavior choices. However, it is much more than a book for the serious actor. My brother, who has never acted in his life, picked up my copy and has not stop talking about it since. It really is a window that opens up to a brilliant study of human behavior in general. I rarely write reviews but this book deserves to have a wide audience. Kudos to Mari Gorman who must be an amazing woman. STROKES was a true revelation to me and I look forward to her next book!
Something brand-new Mar 01, 2008 After I finished reading Strokes of Existence I got very excited, because I felt that I had encountered something that had never before been discovered. I don't even know what to call it: a system for living? I'm very sure this system is new to the world, a new discovery/invention. I'm a writer, and I read the book hoping to find out how to make the phenomenon of "the flow" (i.e., when the writing just flows out of you) happen at will. What I found in this book instead, is a system that applies to all of life. I have begun to apply it to my life.
Splitting the Atom Feb 26, 2008 Mari Gorman's portrayal as Jackie in the Hot L Baltimore was transcendent and transformative. So is this book. Ms. Gorman is one of a kind. So is this book. Rather than attribute the genius of her performance to mysterious magic, Gorman in Strokes of Existence has split the acting atom and analyzed its particles - in order to construct genius anew. Read this book. Starts where The Secret left off. If that seems like a non-sequitur, read this book. See for yourself. Brenda Currin
