Sudden Loss: Earthquake Realities

This book is about a huge earthquake in the Pacific Northwest and the terrifying consequences that follow. The quake and its three tidal waves totally destroy the beautiful and historic Deception Pass Bridge that crosses onto Whidbey Island, parts of the Naval Air Station nearby and sections of Oak Harbor. The devastation is seen through the eyes of many people: a young woman on her way to work, a man right at the bridge, a Navy jet's crew during takeoff from the air base, the Fire and Police Chiefs and Mayor of Oak Harbor, a church pastor, a professor of geology, and others. Their experiences provide diversely fascinating perspectives on what might happen someday. While fictional in some respects - particularly because it hasn't happened yet - most of the supporting facts in this book are accurate. It graphically illustrates the great importance of being prepared beforehand and presents a reason for hope in a citizen's project that succeeds elegantly and just in time - the design and construction of an emergency floating bridge.

4How Fragile is the Deception Pass Bridge?  Feb 15, 2010
By Tyler Black
Sudden Loss by Richard F. Haines is well written and the character development is very detailed. As I was reading I could imagine the struggle of each character's recovery in full vivid color like I was watching it on a television screen. I was riveted as I read and I could not wait to read the next chapter to find out what happened. Through this story I have realized the importance of personal emergency preparedness as well as involvement in Whidbey Island and North Puget Sound as a region being dreadfully unprepared should a natural disaster happen. I highly recommend reading this book for the twists and turns in the story and informing residents of the the North Puget Sound region of the dangers of an unexpected disaster.

5Good read..............  Mar 06, 2010

.............and also good reread causing a look to my own life's needs now and for the future. After living on Whidbey Island for a few years myself I realize how this book has changed my thinking for a necessary look at where we are at the moment. An excellent story line, too. I consumed it in a week.

I know that "Sudden Loss: Earthquake Realities" caused me to become more diligent in my responsibilities for myself and others, too; thanks to Mr.Haines efforts. Many thanks to him and to Amazon for having the book available.
