I'm a sugar addict! Oct 27, 2008
By Chuck Passaglia I just read Sugarettes by Dr. Scott Olson and I liked the book for two reasons. First, Sugarettes helped me identify and start to address my sugar addiction. Yes, I am a lifelong sugar addict: From fruit juice as a baby, to Frosted Flakes as a young man, to anything sweet goes as an adult. Sugarettes is a quick read and, thankfully for the non-medical reader, keeps scientific information at a coherent level of understanding. Second, and maybe more importantly, I think Dr. Olson is on to something more with Sugarettes. Dr. Olson highlights the glaring silence by government regulators and health care associations regarding sugar abuse in our society. I find it odd, in a society that longs for days gone by and the lessons of the "greatest generation," that we haven't explored our risky, unconstrained love affair with sugar and sugar substitutes. Reading Sugarettes, I'm left to wonder whether all unhealthy roads lead to sugar.

Great motivational read Nov 19, 2008
By Scott Nesbett
"Scott"
I like to read motivational books on eating healthy and was lucky enough to get this book. Dr. Olson's style of writing kept me captive as I sat and drank my coffee (with sugar.) After finishing the book instead of feeling guilty about eating sugar, I find I'm more "aware" of when I consume it. I think Dr. Olson is surely on to something when he writes about the fact that there are no "real" or "official" studies that link sugar to obesity or diabetes...similar to smoking vs. cancer (in the 50's and 60's.)
Having a grandmother who had diabetes and required insulin shots every day, I never knew what it was actually doing for her. This book cleared that up for me and explained it in such a way I actually understood without having to re-read that chapter again...meaning it was written with language I (and most non-scientists) could understand.
I'm glad I read this...and it sticks in the back of my mind when my grocery cart starts gravitating toward high-glycemic foods in the store. Great motivation for anyone who is trying to eat a more healthy diet.

Reading this makes it easier to quit sugar Nov 17, 2008
By Tonya Abel Olson I was shocked to learn so many things in this book but, I think the most surprising is how fast sugar adds up and how damaging it is. Dr. Olson made it easy to understand and fun and different to read. It really helps saying no to the kids when I know what's happening when they eat sugar! Thanks, Dr. Olson!

Sugar (Carb) Addiction Is As Bad As Nicotine, Heroin, And Crack Cocaine! Nov 17, 2008
By Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Man
"Jimmy Moore"
What if we started treating sugar addiction like we do nicotine, heroin or crack cocaine addiction? Do you think it would change our perspective about how we view it? You bet it would which was the intention of the author and naturopathic physician Dr. Scott Olson when he wrote the book. Making the case that sugar is as harmful to public health as any drug out there today, Olson outlines all the ins and outs of this issue to help sugar addicts overcome their problem.
Much of his advice focuses on cutting out not just the sugars that you consume, but also anything that would turn to sugar in the body. In other words, starchy carbohydrates are considered sugar by his definition as well. This is a perfect read for anyone who is following a controlled-carb nutritional approach and needs an extra boost of support in overcoming the need for sugar in their lives forever.

Great book on type II diabetes Dec 19, 2008
By Mark Costello
"Licensed Acupuncturist and Addiction Specialist"
Sugarettes
I have found "Sugarettes", by Dr. Scott Olsen, to be a great read for anyone who is interested in how sugar works in your body, and more importantly, why you cannot stop eating it.
I am an acupuncturist and addiction specialist and this book is the best book I have found to help my patients understand why sugar is so hard to stop eating, and why it is so important to your health to reduce how much you eat.
I recommend this book to all of my type II diabetes patients, and to any patient who is trying to lose weight, but has a problem with sugar cravings. The feedback that I have gotten from my patients has been great.
I commend Dr. Olsen for having the stones to stand up to this huge industry that has somehow controlled the research to continue selling their goods.
