Survival of the Fittest Aug 26, 2008 "Survival of the Fittest" by Michael G. Rom, Ph.D is a recommended read for parents wanting to help their high school children learn how to study as well as for college students needing help with taking notes successfully. It is also recommended for teachers who want to help their students develop good study habits.
Dr. Rom's explanation of how nature versus nurture compares to computer hardware and software points out how each are important and necessary.
Probably the most salient myth he dispels is that "anyone can grow up to be anything they want to be". He explains in detail that it is more accurate to say "anyone can grow up to be what they can." Another comforting statement is his definition of success. He says "Success is when you are feeling good about yourself and making progress."
His humor and references to problems he experienced as a student who had difficulty reading, writing legibly and taking meaningful study notes should help others with similar difficulties realize that they can overcome their deficiencies and learn if they are motivated, make a decision to excel and pay the price as he did.
If I had had the benefits of the lessons he learned and is now sharing with his readers I am sure I would have been a better student, parent and business man.

From Surviving to Thriving Jul 21, 2008 First, this book is REAL. It captures with vivid distinction the emotional and academic journey of anyone who has ever struggled or been challenged by the task of "Learning to Read, then Reading to Learn"!Next, this book will make you smile whether you struggled or not, and propel you toward a HOPE that anything is possible with the right balance, a passionate goal, and everyday, old fashioned--hard work. Finally, this book gives PRESPECTIVE for parents that may have a child faced with a learning challenge. I am a parent of 3 great kids, 2 of which have what I like to call "Different Abilities". This book will give you insight and knowledge regarding learning challenges, and more importantly, encourage you to be brave, investigate, build a plan, and move forward into the future supporting your child to succeed. At age 38, I am empowered by reading Survival of the Fittest to go back to college and earn my degree to be an educator. I want to set the example for my children that you can not only Survive, but you can Thrive!I thank Dr. Rom for being so bold and brave to share his experiences. I believe that when you share your experience with others, you take them on the journey with you. Thank you for the ride!
