I'm a Survivor! Feb 14, 2006 Cornelia Gibson's debut novel SURVIVING BROKEN PROMISES is a must read for any woman who has found herself trapped in a cycle of loving the wrong man. The saying goes "experience is a good teacher" and the protagonist in this story has learned her lesson well with each ordeal she encounters. What she learns matures and raises her above various situations to prevail.
The story begins with sixteen-year-old Cassandra. A product of a broken home, she is very gullible when trusting her heart to the opposite sex. The book centers on Cassandra's relationships with different men and the bad choices she makes based on the promises of these men. There is Marcus, her first crush. He is a bad-boy and has the mind-set that Cassandra will always be his girl regardless of who she is currently dating. Aaron is quiet and reserved but somehow manages to turn her world upside down. Robert, the man that Cassandra marries, is controlling and abusive. There are also a couple of other men who play key parts in Cassandra's life
In the backdrop is the strained relationship Cassandra has with her mother. It is the driving determination for her to be a good mother to her two kids. As Cassandra gets older, she is able to look back on the relationships she had with her mother and boyfriends and to reflect on the things she learned from each one. As she starts to realize what is best for her, she is able to strengthen her interactions with her mother and to expect more from her relationships with men.
SURVIVING BROKEN PROMISES is an engaging read. Gibson has told a very real tale that a lot of women are actually living. Although there were moments in the book where I found myself frustrated at the character making the same mistakes, I couldn't put the book down because I was rooting for Cassandra. I did have a problem with the amount of grammatical and formatting errors in the book. Despite the errors, this book is worth reading.
