Talkeetna Good Time? You Bet! Jan 23, 2009
By G. R. Miller
"Writer"
You know, when my wife and I loaded our belongings into the biggest Ryder van available, fought crosswinds all across Kansas and lugged that rental truck's diesel engine up to our new home in the Colorado Rocky Mountains - where we had nothing more awaiting than a roof over our heads and a mortgage, with no jobs to pay for it - I thought we lived like pioneers. Then I had the privilege to not only meet Dennis Brown - DB to his pals - but to read his work and help him with the writing process; and I was humbled. "Talkeetna Good Time" is DB's collection of real life adventures that companion readers on a side-by-side journey with this generous, gentleman; a self-made man, who, by the educational standards of his day, would have stagnated within a mediocre lifestyle, highlighted by menial employment. But in "Sensation of a Nobody" Dennis reveals his ambition, plus his vision of a future far from Omaha, Nebraska; which leads to "Alaska or Bust", where DB, his wife and two sons truly exemplify the pioneering spirit, "consumed by the vastness of the North, where the sun defies rising in the east and setting in the west." And it's the North that inspires the Brown's saga: stories like "Cold" that compel shivers on the most sweltering day; "Bearly Coffee" that coaxes chuckles from the most stalwart curmugeons; "Russian Mike" that relates an epic tale of staunch bravery, rugged determination and devout friendship; "Grandfather" - if this one doesn't grab your heart, you don't have one; and "Don Got My Goat" - I have to say, I'd have killed the bastard, but not Dennis; he finds good in everyone. 266 pages provide a cover-to-cover read that will entertain, engage your soul, make you laugh, gasp and shed a tear. If you liked TV's "Northern Exposure", you'll love Talkeetna Good Time, especially since Dennis served as consultant to the folks who put that show together.
Thankfully, folks, Dennis Brown has more stories to tell; I can't wait for volume 2!

Talkeetna Good Time Apr 25, 2011
By Peter Having spent a little time in Alaska in the late seventies, what intrigued me was the cast of characters and replicants that are attracted to that state like a magnet. Former bush pilot Dennis Brown could fill a book with just his flying adventures- but here you also have stories of he and his wife Carol's encounters with the natives and "cheechakos". As good as "Northern Exposure", only real...
An incredible book about an incredible couple Dec 12, 2011
By P. Konefke This is not only one of the best Alaskan books I have ever read but actually one that could be described as 13 great books all rolled into one. I challenge anyone to not complete any of the 13 chapters this book contains once having started. Dennis's writing style is one that makes you think it's just you and him sitting around a campfire in the wilderness of Alaska. Dennis as a young boy was way ahead of his time and miles ahead of his peers in accomplishments and that continued into adulthood. You'll also discover that the phrase 'there's a good woman behind every man' really applies to Dennis's wife Carol...they together indeed live life to the fullest and continue to do that to this day. I have been very fortunate to recently begin corresponding with Dennis and he is as warm, gracious, kind, and generous as he comes across in this book. This book is a must have for anyone who loves Alaska and the Talkeetna area in particular. Dennis and Carol are true Alaskan pioneers and I can't wait until volumes 2 and beyond are released.
Great Story Dec 07, 2011
By linda Just finished reading this book and it is a great story of Alaska, people, adventure and flying. My husband, who is not a book reader, read it first and when he got done handed it to me and said, Read this, you will like it!" I did and he was right - it is very interesting and enjoyable. Hope DB writes another one soon.

By pilot girl Wow! What an amazing.....awesome book! This is a book that you can read over and over and over and get something new each time! It is like watching a very interesting movie. Even if you are not a pilot of anykind or ever been to Alaska, the readers views and life accounts are so well written it feels as though you are riding along with the Browns on every adventure! A MUST read!
