Talkeetna Good Time

As a young man growing up near Valley, Nebraska, I dreamed of wild adventures and living “on the edge.”  In simple journals, I recorded my thoughts and wild imaginings.   As life provided new experiences, I captured my world through photography and words.  Later in life, my wife and family encouraged me to share my tales of the North with others who share my enthusiasm for living big.In my book “Talkeetna Good Time,” I open up my heart and reveal intimate musings of a young boy determined to become a pilot and push beyond the expected.  I married a young woman willing to accompany me on this amazing and often perilous journey.  After a few years in the Canadian North, I moved my young family to a small bush community in Alaska. Most of the stories tell of ‘bigger than life” Alaskan characters that dwell in simple structures and endure unimaginable hardships to put down roots in the frigid land they love. I will ever be grateful to the hearty folk who have become part of my story.  As life itself, I share the humorous, the exultant, the threatening, and the utterly depressing.Dear to my heart are the wonderful creatures that roam the north.  “Mary’s Bear” and “Don Got My Goat” are accounts of some of my encounters with nature’s bounty.  My heart still remembers with fondness the cold nights with “shimmering ribbons of blue, green, and red that form a gigantic curtain, pulled across the lake by the hand of God.”  Be careful as you read or you, too, may become infected with the “Alaska disease.”

5Authentic, without guile  Oct 29, 2009
Dennis and Carol Brown are dear, long-time friends of my husband. Having met them more recently I've been fortunate and fascinated to sit at table with them and listen to incredible stories like the ones in this incredible book. Dennis tells them in a humble manner. He credits his Creator for gifting him with an intuition for the "road less taken" which has led him to life beyond the norm--to great adventure, hundreds of successful rescue missions and valuable relationships that bring tears to his eyes as he remembers and speaks of them.

This book, written for precious grandchilren, is not simply a retelling of his life as his legacy to them, but more profoundly, an example of life well-lived every single day for them--and us. Dennis values risk-taking, not for the glory of it, but as a way to make the most of the gift of life. He's not wasted a minute. He takes what comes to him each day sensing the possiblities, dreaming visions and enjoying the ride. As a result relationships are built and stories evolve.

We have shared this book with family and friends. Without fail, as others have written, readers don't move until they finish. They are inspired to experience their own lives in a more adventuresome way. Isn't that what a good book is supposed to do? Inspire us? Dennis and Carol show us how to live beyond mediocrity in this great little tome.

5"Good life" is experiencing possibilities  Oct 21, 2009
Connie Pfeiffenberger, Fort Collins, CO, USA
Talkeetna Good Life is a must read for young adults on up who aspire to or have visited the largest and most remote state. Dennis and Carol Brown thrived on the raw edge of remote Alaska, where airplanes are the family car and the nearest "doctor" might be a medicine man or retired EMT or nurse in the not-so-near cabin next door.
Dennis Brown is a natural story teller, rolling out his journals with candor, insight and uncommon acceptance of colorful characters who populate the wilds of Alaska. He vividly paints portraits on our imagination of escapes from Siberian prison camps, felons from the "lower 48" and people who simply want to be left alone. New relationships are are forged in the harsh realities of 40 below zero and unforgiving dark and ice of extended winter months and summers spent hunting, fishing and preparing survival stores for the extremes to come. Yet DB portrays Talkeetna as warm and welcoming; a great place to live and raise a family.
With insightful candor, Dennis journals include his own early life in eastern Nebraska, acquiring a car and rebuilding it before he had a driver's license, and buying land and building a cabin while peers were only concerned about an upcoming game or a date for the prom.
The underlying premise in this book is that life is best lived exploring and real joy found in each new experience. Talkeetna Good Life was wonderfully inspirational and just a very good read. I, for one, hope there are more stories to be shared.

5Nice stories...  Oct 13, 2009
Weird, real and touching stories about fishing, hunting, flying, bears, and just enjoying and living in Alaska. Get it used or new.

5Good Times in Talkeetna  Oct 13, 2009
What a more arduous undertaking can one imagine, than that taken by
author Dennis Brown and his family, on their trek to seek a new life in
the Alaskan frontier. In his book, Talkeetna Good Time, Dennis recounts
the trials and tribulations of his adventures and the characters he met
along the way.
A great read, Dennis describes his life as he sets out to establish
himself in the north country. He follows his dream and passion, as he
moves his family from Omaha to Talkeetna. Along the way he battles
the elements, meets some odd characters as well as some friendly folks.
At times he preservers through life threatening challenges.
The risks he takes on this journey may sound crazy to some but not for
DB. For he dares to dream and if we never take such chances we would
never step off the curb.
For a glimpse of rural Alaskan life, Talkeetna Good Time gives you a
wonderful look through the eyes of Dennis Brown.

5Talkeetna Good Time is a great book!  Sep 03, 2009
My husband and I met Dennis Brown in Estes Park Colorado while vacationing there in July 2009 as my husband had a t-shirt on from Alaska. Alaska is where we honeymooned a little over 6 years ago and we absolutely fell in love with it. We have planned to return there on 25th Anniversary. However, after reading this book, I was reminded of how much I loved Alaska and cannot wait to return for a longer period of time. I really enjoyed reading about Dennis' life and felt at times as if I knew the people he was writing about. I recommend this book to anyone who loves the outdoor or who is planning on spending time in Alaska. Great Book!
