5Excellent Overview of Tasmania  Apr 11, 2009
By Zumi Dogett
I've read a number of books on Tasmania and this book provides a most comprehensive portrait of the Australian state. It is really a fine piece of work that covers various aspects to include history, geography, and travel tips. The writer uses a comedic and passionate style that makes it both an informative and fun read. Recommended to anyone who plans to visit, learn more about Tasmania, or just as an enjoyable read.

4avoid the poppy farms  May 10, 2007
By W Boudville
The descriptions of Tasmania will be familiar to many Australians. Hobart and Launceston are well covered. And so too with the farming regions. Very scenic and well suited for hiking in many sections, during most of the year. The compactness of Tasmania compared to other Australian states means that you can see a fair amount of it in a reasonable time, like during a holiday week. (Don't try this in Western Australia!)

At least for some Australians from the mainland, a key consideration might be to remember to bring sufficiently warm clothing during the summer [sic]. Given the warmth of summer in most of Australia, it is easy to forget that Tasmania can be quite temperate all year round. Especially if you find yourself doing night hiking.

The only thing to beware in the countryside is not to get too close to the opium farms. Yes. There are a few farms that are licensed to grow poppies, from which opium and other derivatives are made for medical uses. Their farmers tend to have shotguns and are very wary of strangers. Unfortunately, the book doesn't tell you where the farms are. Not something widely bruited.
